Excellence in Teaching and Research on East Asia

NSS2009 result graphic

SEAS is one of the largest institutions in Europe teaching and researching about East Asia. We have more than 400 students on our various programmes.

Our excellence in teaching is widely acknowledged. In the 2009 National Student Survey SEAS was ranked - by students themselves - first among Asian Studies departments in the UK.

In collaboration with the University of Leeds, we have established the White Rose East Asia Centre, which produces world class research and advanced research training in Japanese and Chinese studies. In addition, with the generous support of the Chinese government, we host the Sheffield Confucius Institute, which provides teaching and research into Chinese language and culture.

If you still need persuading, this is what one of our recent graduates says about SEAS:

    Courses

At SEAS we take an inter-disciplinary approach to studying China, Japan and Korea. Concentrating on contemporary East Asia, we place a strong emphasis on the acquisition of advanced language skills.

    Research

The School is one of the most distinguished departments of its kind, with a vibrant research culture focusing on four research clusters. We welcome proposals from prospective PhD students.
