Research
The School of East Asian Studies has a vibrant research culture, with staff members actively engaged in research and publication at international levels of excellence.
The School has a strong focus on collaboration in multi- and inter-disciplinary research and staff are encouraged to form research relationships across national, institutional, and subject boundaries. This is reflected in the School's ability to offer joint supervision as part of our collaboration with the University of Leeds as part of the White Rose East Asia Centre (Executive Director, Professor Caroline Rose). The National Institute of Chinese Studies (Director, Professor Chris Dent, Leeds) and the National Institute of Japanese Studies (Director, Professor Glenn Hook, Sheffield) together constitute the Centre.
Staff also pursue a range of individual research projects, and have attracted funding from the British Academy, the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), the Leverhulme Foundation, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, the Japan Foundation and other prestigious funding bodies.
White Rose East Asia Centre
Through the White Rose East Asia Centre, the School's research staff collaborate with colleagues from the Department of East Asian Studies at the University of Leeds. This provides synergies and opportunities for students to become part of a wider research community on East Asia involving specialists in both the social sciences and humanities from both institutions. Funded by Higher Education Funding Council for England, the ESRC and the AHRC, the aim of the White Rose Centre is to develop a global centre of excellence for research and training on modern China and Japan.
