Highly rated in the Research Assessment Exercise
Physics and Astronomy scored very highly in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) released in Dec 2008. 90% of our research was considered to be of international quality. This result places Sheffield within the top 10 Physics and Astronomy departments in the UK. We are ranked joint 7th in both the Guardian and Times Higher league tables.

Our department has achieved top marks for student satisfaction within the Russell Group of Universities!
Our students have ranked us joint first for overall satisfaction within the Russell Group of Universities in the 2008 National Student Survey. In this independent survey of all final year students we achieved an overall satisfaction score of 95%. This places us joint first in this group of 20 leading UK research-intensive universities committed to maintaining the highest standards of research, education and knowledge transfer.
