Students head to Europe to mark fall of Berlin Wall

Two lucky law students from the University of Sheffield will be joining a debate with the President of the European Parliament next week (10 November 2009), to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

David Saxton and Natalie Sheldon, both aged 20, were nominated to take part in the debate as they were born on the same day the Berlin Wall was taken down. They will join 87 other students from across the European Union´s member states to discuss "What does Europe mean to me?"

Twenty years ago the Soviet Empire in Central and Eastern Europe was dissolved, putting an end to a divided Europe. The fall of the Berlin Wall, which had divided West Germany from East Germany for almost a quarter of a century, symbolised the end of Communism in Eastern Europe. The European Parliament will mark this in a number of ways, ranging from a formal ceremony on 11 November 2009 to a photographic exhibition depicting the historical events that took place that year, to the student debate.

David said: "It is essential to remember the past, and I feel privileged to be able to take part in the European Union´s celebrations of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall. However I think that its equally important we look to the future and it´s great that the President of the European Parliament thinks it´s important to spend time listening to young people's views on Europe.

This is a fantastic opportunity, especially as I´m currently studying EU law, and I just can´t wait to get on the plane now!"

Natalie said: "I think this is a great opportunity and I am looking forward to seeing the European Parliament and celebrating this monumental moment in Brussels. Europe to me means great opportunities both socially and economically. It gives me a greater chance to broaden my perspectives and become more open-minded. I am sure this will be a great experience."

Professor Tamara Hervey, from the University of Sheffield´s School of Law, said: "As a top UK law school, we are superbly connected on a national and international level. My position as Jean Monnet Professor of European Union Law means that I am in touch with the European Union institutions with respect to both my research and teaching, which are integrated and inseparable. I am pleased to have been able to nominate LLB Law students David and Natalie, and that this has resulted in such a wonderful opportunity for them."
