Sheffield professor elected to prestigious post
A professor from the University of Sheffield has been elected as the new President of the European Society of Pathology.
Professor Michael Wells, from the University of Sheffield´s School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, took up the post at the 22nd European Congress of Pathology in Florence on the 09 September 2009.
Professor Wells has been President of the British Gynecological Cancer Society and the International Society of Gynecological Pathologists. He has published more than 200 original papers, book chapters and review articles and has received many invitations to lecture around the world. He also has a substantial consultation practice and in 2004, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in recognition of the major contributions made to the well-being of women.
In his new role, Professor Wells aims to enhance the role of the Society as a major force in European pathology through its permanent office in Brussels, its annual congresses, and its numerous other educational activities. In particular, he believes that there is an urgent need to further the development of cellular pathology in Eastern Europe.
Professor Wells said:"It is a huge honour and privilege to be only the second British pathologist to have been elected President in the 45 year history of the European Society of Pathology. I hope to be a worthy successor to so many distinguished European colleagues."
Professor Tony Weetman, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Sheffield, said: "This is an outstanding achievement which recognises the many contributions Mike Wells has made to Pathology. I am sure that under his expert leadership, the European Society of Pathology will flourish as a first-rank scientific and educational forum."
