Working thesis title: Arts Consumption and Diaspora Identity Formation among the Chinese Communities in the UK

Supervisors: Dr Elizabeth Carnegie and Dr Eva Kipnis
Kathy’s current research focused on the relationship between consumption perspective (of arts and culture) and identity issues among the Chinese diaspora communities in the UK. Prior to her studies at Sheffield, she has experience from Festival and Events Management in multiple local and international festival as well as the Chinese community’s arts events in Manchester. The former for instance, she developed audience analysis skills with difference festival projects at Manchester International Festival (MIF). The latter by organising the Chinese New Year Gala for overseas Chinese and promoting traditional Chinese arts and culture to both Chinese and British communities in Manchester.

Kathy’s research explores the role of arts and culture within ethnic minority groups, specifically, how people of ethnic background consume the arts while living away from their home countries. She believes through a deep understanding of ethnic consumers’ behaviours in the context of arts and culture, it continuously contributes to the community development and societal harmony.
Primarily interested in how ethnic consumers (i.e. Chinese) engage with the arts and culture sector in the UK context, understanding the value of arts in particular to people and society. She is also interested in the effects of migration on consumer behaviour, and the topic of cultural diversity.
