As I had planned to work in the marketing field prior to pursuing a masters degree, Sheffield University Management School stood out

When selecting the school for my academic journey, I conducted research to determine the level of influence the institution held in the field I aspired to pursue my career in. In my case, as I had planned to work in the marketing field prior to pursuing a masters degree, Sheffield University Management School stood out for several reasons. Firstly, it boasts Triple Crown accreditation. Additionally, the extensive alumni network associated with the school serves as another crucial factor in my decision-making process, given its esteemed reputation.

The people of Sheffield proved to be exceedingly friendly and approachable

I experienced mixed emotions upon my initial arrival, as it marked my first time venturing far from home and stepping out of my comfort zone for an extended period. While excitement certainly prevailed, I also felt a great deal of nervousness about the forthcoming new experiences. Adjusting to a new language, culture, and environment meant facing these challenges independently.

I made a conscious decision to step outside of my comfort zone even before arriving in this town. Therefore, I pushed myself to initiate conversations and actively engage with new people. Thankfully, I found that almost all of my flatmates, classmates, and the local people I encountered in Sheffield were incredibly friendly, approachable, and easy to converse with. As a result, I swiftly experienced a sense of belonging and began to thoroughly enjoy the increased social involvement in my daily life. All it required was a willingness to open up, embrace the potential for mistakes, and ask questions whenever necessary. Before I knew it, I seamlessly integrated into this new chapter of life.

Sheffield is a place that offers opportunities to explore and realise one’s potential

I truly appreciate Sheffield as a place that offers opportunities to explore and realise one's potential. Within our modules and seminars, we were actively encouraged to voice our opinions and engage in discussions with our group members. There was no definitive right or wrong answer to every question, and it was perfectly acceptable to make mistakes. The key was to actively engage with the topics and make an effort. It was through this process that we learned and grew. I greatly admired this learning model because it differs from the educational approach in my hometown.

Academics were always happy to impart their expertise and advice outside of teaching sessions as well

One important lesson I received was not technically from the modules but from the programme director at that time, Dr Lien Monkhouse. She imparted a valuable piece of advice to me during a consultation after a module, which was to always be proactive and stay ahead of others. I greatly appreciate this suggestion and have since applied this principle to both my daily job management and life planning. Thus far, it has proven to be highly effective.

My friends and I reached the semi-final of the IBM competition

The time when my friends and I participated in the IBM competition and reached the semi-final round was a significant event. During the competition, there was a spontaneous speech section where each team was given one minute on stage to present a new startup idea generated within the group, with only 15 minutes of preparation time. I volunteered to deliver the speech, as I wanted to challenge myself. It proved to be quite a daunting task for a non-English speaker who had only been in the country for three months.

However, we managed to successfully complete the speech within the given time limit, and our business idea received affirmation. I distinctly recall one of the judges giving us a thumbs up when the time was up. Personally, this was an incredibly memorable moment.

Spending time in the library with friends created unforgettable and enjoyable memories

You spend a significant amount of time in the library conducting research or simply hanging out with friends. During the last semester, when writing your dissertation alongside a group of friends and staying up together through the night, it may not have been the most pleasant experience, but it created unforgettable and enjoyable memories that you would share with your mates.

The Employability Hub has proven to be an invaluable resource

The Employability Hub has proven to be an invaluable resource in helping me secure an internship after completing my dissertation. My journey in the UK would not have been as enriching without the support provided by all these facilities.

The Students’ Union is my all-time favourite spot on campus

The Students’ Union holds a special place in my heart as my all-time favourite spot on campus. I particularly adore the zero-waste shop located on the ground floor, where you can bring your own containers to purchase snacks, laundry detergent, and a wide array of eco-friendly goodies. Additionally, as a Sheffield student, attending the Friday night club is an absolute must. My friends and I had an incredible amount of fun there.

Since graduating, I’ve worked with people from all around the world

After my graduation and 6 month internship at Octane International Limited, I went back to my hometown and started my career in the marketing division in Amway Taiwan, where I've gained a solid professional experience. I introduced new products into the Taiwan market and it was during my initial job experience that I discovered my deep passion for working in the marketing field, particularly in the role of a product manager.

Two years later I waved goodbye to Amway and opened my new life chapter with Standard Foods Co. in Taipei. Throughout my career to date, I’ve had the chance to work with people from all around the world.

Sheffield has positively impacted both my personal growth and career trajectory

I derive immense satisfaction from my educational experience in Sheffield, as it has proven to be a transformative journey that has positively impacted both my personal growth and career trajectory. To all students contemplating to apply to this esteemed institution, here’s my advice: if you aspire to uncover your untapped potential, Sheffield should unequivocally be your primary choice.
