Welcome to the Department!

Welcome to Claire Burridge and Alice Hicklin!

The Jessop West building

We are very please to announce that Dr Claire Burridge has started her Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowship for her project Crossroads: The Evolution of Early Medieval Medicine in Global & Local Contexts.

Claire broadly works on early medieval health and medicine, and is particularly interested in exploring the movement of medical knowledge and the relationship between knowledge and practice during the Carolingian period. My research draws on a range of disciplines, bringing together textual, archaeological, and biocodicological evidence.

We are also joined by Dr Alice Hicklin, who has joined the department as the Postdoctoral Research Assistant on Charles West's AHRC-DFG-funded 'Priests in a post-imperial world' project.

Alice's previous projects were Connected Clerics: Building a Universal Church in the Late Antique West (380-640 CE) at Royal Holloway, University of London, and before that, the project After Empire: Using and Not Using the Past in the Crisis of the Carolingian World at the Freie Universität Berlin.
