The Department

The Department of History is based in Jessop West, an architecturally innovative building to which we moved in 2009.

This puts us at the heart of the central University campus, directly opposite the Information Commons and close to University Halls of Residence, lecture halls, and local amenities.

High Quality Teaching at a Top Research University

At the Department of History, we take the broad scope of the discipline seriously. One of the most active and successful centres for teaching and historical research in the UK, our staff are engaged in cutting-edge research on a huge range of topics, ranging from the third century right up to the twenty first, and with particular strengths in British, European, African and American history.

We are proud that our teaching makes full use of the diversity of research conducted within the Department, with the result that our Undergraduate programme is both rich and diverse. With choices ranging widely across the history of Britain, Europe and the wider world from Antiquity to the present day, our modules introduce students to a wide variety of approaches to the writing of history, training them to be both well-rounded and flexible historians and capable, confident graduates. Our teaching has been consistently rated as 'Excellent' by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA), the nationally recognised guide to University teaching quality. We are also home to a thriving community of postgraduate students, working in fields whose diversity again reflects the range of the Department.

Wide Ranging Academic Excellence

The Department's staff are prominent in national and international professional bodies, including funding agencies and the editorial boards of leading academic presses and journals. Our outstanding record of research has been consistently recognised by external bodies. Both the 1996 and 2001 national Research Assessment Exercises awarded us a prestigous grade 5, and in the 2008 exercise we were delighted to be ranked tied 2nd in the UK for world-leading historical research.
