Professor Keith Burnett, Vice-Chancellor

It is an honour to be Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sheffield – a University which has for over a century been a centre of discovery and understanding. The University of Sheffield was endowed from the start with the best qualities of its home city: excellence and innovation, friendliness, independence of thought, and a preference for action over rhetoric.

Today the University has expanded from its original intake of 114 students to well over 20,000 from over 100 countries, with over 5,000 staff. It is regularly ranked within the top 100 Universities in the world, distinguished by its world-leading research conducted across all disciplines and the outstanding quality of teaching and learning for students.

Our aim has long been to improve the world by seeking to understand it better. The University´s motto Rerum Cognoscere Causas means `to know the causes of things´. We remain committed today to our original mission of changing the world for the better through the power of ideas and knowledge.

From Nobel Prize winners to prestigious partnerships with global companies, from life-changing research to student achievement and charitable volunteering, the University of Sheffield continues to make a real impact for the good. It is a privilege to be part of the University´s continuing success.
