This session homes in on how we make sounds, how accents may vary and why, and how speech is processed in the mind.

A taste of linguistics

Everyone has something to say about language, which is not surprising given that language is everywhere and in nearly everything we do.

Just as language is omnipresent, its study is equally multi-faceted. We can look at how languages are structured, or how our minds process language, or how language is used to form identities, to sell stuff, or for political means, or how languages change over time, and so on.

This session homes in on how we make sounds, how accents may vary and why, and how speech is processed in the mind.

This session is suitable for students in years 12 and 13.

• 4.50pm: Question and answer session about the taster lecture
• 5pm: Question and answer session about your subject at Sheffield with an admissions tutor and current students
