Biography

I joined ScHARR at the University of Sheffield as a clinical lecturer in public health in 2006. Prior to this I was based in the public health directorate at NHS Rotherham.

Research interests

My general interest is in methods for quantifying the health effects of broad public health level interventions. During a recent Medical Research Council Fellowship in Health Services / Public Health Research I worked with Jeremy Oakley in the School of Mathematics and Statistics (SOMAS) and Jim Chilcott in ScHARR on methods for managing uncertainty in health economic decision models. Our approach is similar in flavour to work that has emerged from the Managing Uncertainty in Complex Models project, and relates to a number of themes being pursued by the ScHARR / SOMAS collaboration CHEBS (the Centre for Bayesian Statistics in Health Economics).

You can read more our discrepancy based method for managing model uncertainty in this paper in JRSS Series C, and in this ScHARR Discussion Paper.

We have also proposed an efficient method for computing partial EVPI. The method is explained in this paper submitted to Medical Decision Making, and an R function to implement the method can be downloaded here.

Teaching interests

I teach on the Master in Public Health and undergraduate medical MB ChB degrees, and offer MFPH exam support to the Yorkshire and Humber public health training scheme.

I am interested in hearing from students who wish to use quantitative methods in their MPH, MPhil or BMedSci related projects, and particularly from those students with an interest in public health GIS or public health decision analysis.

Professional activities

I sit on the NICE NHS Evidence Advisory Committee, the independent body that makes recommendations on the accreditation of producers of authoritative evidence for use within the NHS (see link).

Recently, I've become involved in the Partnership Board that oversees the National Diabetes Audit for adults in England and Wales. The NDA is the largest annual clinical audit in the world, and provides a comprehensive and authoritative assessment of the care of adults with diabetes.

I am a member of the University of Sheffield Senate.
