Teaching and administrative duties
I am Director of our MSc Psychological Research course. I lecture in quantitative methods for this MSc and also on the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, the taught programme offered by the Social Science Faculty's Doctoral Training Centre and the MSc in Occupational Psychology. At undergraduate level, I organise and teach on the Research Methods module at Level 2 and contribute to the Level 2 Developmental Psychology module.
Research Interests
Antisocial Behaviour
I am interested in the causes, correlates, and outcomes of antisocial behaviour in childhood and adolescence. In particular my work focusses on the identification of meaningful subtypes of antisocial behaviour. For example I have addressed the relationships between oppositionality and conduct disorder, and the role of callous and unemotional traits.
Risky Driving Behaviour
My work addresses the psychological factors that put young drivers at increased risk of crash. This includes both skill based factors, such as hazard perception, and style based factors such as speeding. I have been involved in developing and evaluating interventions to reduce risky driving in young people in collaboration with Sheffield City Council.
Anticipation skills in real world tasks
Developing from my interest in driving skills, I am interested in the development of anticipatory skills in real-world tasks. This has led to the development of video-based measures of anticipation in tennis. I am particularly interested in the extent to which neuroimaging can inform our understanding of the cognitive processes involved.
Quality of Life in Chronic Illness
This work addresses predictors of quality of life in survivors of cancer. I am currently supervising a project examining whether an educational intervention can improve psychosocial functioning in children with leukaemia.
