Project Manager Qidi Wu's career has gone from strength to strength since graduating in 2019. Here Qidi explains how the skills, qualifications, mentorship and support he received at Sheffield have been instrumental in shaping his career.

What are your main responsibilities?

Responsible for planning consultation and benefit investment in the cloud computing field of the whole group. As the main director in charge of the private cloud cloud project, I analyse and plan the project from the perspective of technical rationality and investment efficiency. At the same time, I participate in the planning and construction of an artificial intelligence computing power centre, and industrial research.

Can you describe a typical day?

On a typical day, I start by reviewing updates and developments within the cloud computing industry to stay on top of emerging trends. I then consult with clients, discussing their specific needs and challenges. This often involves deep dives into their technical infrastructure and understanding their long-term goals. My specialised knowledge in cloud computing allows me to offer efficient and precise solutions.

Throughout the day, I collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, bringing in perspectives from investment efficiency and project management to ensure that the solutions provided are not only technically sound but also financially viable. This interdisciplinary approach ensures that every technological solution proposed aligns with the broader business goals and offers a solid return on investment. By the end of the day, I reflect on the consultations, evaluating areas of improvement and strategizing for upcoming projects. This constant cycle of learning, consulting, and strategizing helps me continuously refine my skills and offer better solutions to clients.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your current role or your greatest career achievement so far?

In my current role, I focus predominantly on consultations within the cloud computing domain, granting me a macro, top-down perspective of the entire industry. This not only enables me to have a lucid understanding of industry trends and evolutions, but also to apply my specialised knowledge in cloud computing to address tangible challenges, offering efficient and precise solutions to clients.

Such a consulting role provides me with a unique opportunity to refine and hone my expertise, maturing my skills with every challenge encountered. However, what I believe adds the most value is not just the application of technical know-how. It's the process wherein I've integrated and expanded upon various disciplines beyond cloud computing, such as investment efficiency and project management. This interdisciplinary approach affords me a comprehensive vantage point to assess the long-term value and return on investment of technological solutions. Such capability becomes particularly crucial in the investment realm, as it requires not only a profound grasp of technology but also a deep insight into investment risks and rewards.

Therefore, I feel that my present position has endowed me with a precious opportunity, equipping me with the potential to thrive in the investment sector. I am confident that, with my specialised knowledge combined with this multidisciplinary perspective, I can bring substantial value to any investment team.

Are there any challenging aspects? If so, what are they?

Absolutely, like any profession, there are challenges in my role, which often also serve as opportunities for growth. One of the primary challenges is staying updated with the rapid pace of technological advancements in the cloud computing industry. As the technology evolves, so do the challenges and needs of our clients. It's imperative to be always ahead of the curve to provide them with the best solutions.

Additionally, the interdisciplinary approach I employ, integrating perspectives from investment efficiency and project management, can sometimes lead to complex decision-making processes. Balancing technical excellence with financial viability requires careful analysis and often entails making difficult trade-offs. Moreover, working with diverse clients means that their infrastructures, needs, and visions vary greatly.

Crafting tailor-made solutions that align with each client's specific goals, while ensuring a return on investment, can be a demanding task. Lastly, as in any consulting role, effective communication is key. Conveying complex technical solutions in a comprehensible manner to stakeholders who might not have a deep technical background is crucial and can sometimes be challenging. However, I firmly believe that facing these challenges head-on is what refines my skills and keeps me passionate about my work. It's the process of overcoming these hurdles that brings the most satisfaction and drives continuous growth in my career.
