Last September UG student Rich Moran conducted an experimental reconstruction to test if bog iron could be smelting in a bloomery furnace.

He will also assess if the material produced from the smelt is different chemically from that produced when smelting iron ore as part of his dissertation studies.

His dissertation is part of a collaborative project between Yvette Marks, Doncaster Museum, WYAS, Historic England and South Yorkshire Archaeological Service. The wider project is looking at a number of sites in Doncaster with possible evidence for smelting bog ore and looking to see if analytical approaches can help identify if the smelting activity included bog ore or iron ore.
