In memory of Timothy Shone
It is with great sadness that we share that Tim Shone passed away on 9th July 2023 after a courageous battle with motor neurone disease (MND). Our thoughts go to Tim’s family and friends at this very sad time.

Despite the challenges presented by MND, Tim continued to embrace every moment with his loved ones. Whether it was cheering on his grandchildren from his offroad buggy on the local children's football field or sharing cherished moments with his beloved wife, Anne, at the theatre, Tim's dedication to those he held dear was a testament to his character.
Tim was diagnosed with MND in January 2022, a battle he approached with incredible strength of character and bravery. Shortly after, he was referred to Sheffield Neurologist and Director of the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN), Professor Dame Pam Shaw.
Tim's commitment to raising awareness and funds for MND research at the University of Sheffield was truly inspiring. He said about SITraN’s work:
As a MND patient, any advances in research are extremely important. SITraN’s research gives hope to me and others with the disease, however small. This potentially life changing research has got to be continued and supported.”

Alongside his family, friends, and supporters, he worked tirelessly to contribute to groundbreaking research that could impact countless lives. Together, they raised an astounding £178,000 for MND research at the University of Sheffield. This wonderful gift has been used to support cutting-edge scientific equipment and our MND research programmes in SITraN.
I was incredibly saddened to hear the news of Tim’s passing. He was a wonderful person who coped with the cruel effects of MND with a huge amount of stoicism and dignity. He received tremendous love and support throughout his illness from his lovely wife, Anne, his family and his many friends and colleagues. This is a testament to his courage and positivity - he was held in the highest esteem by everyone who knew him. During his visit to SITraN he was very clear that he wanted to contribute to MND research for the benefit of future sufferers and he gave his time to take part in a clinical trial of an experimental treatment for MND. It was a privilege to have got to know such a special and generous person and I only wish that our clinical and scientific teams at SITraN could have done more to help his condition.
