Description

The module aims to provide students with a critical understanding of ownership applicable to medicine and the ethical issues arising from them. It will consider this in the light of specific forms of medicine focused upon range from pharmaceuticals, biologics and potentially including the entire body. Specific areas include: analysis of patenting and its application to pharmaceuticals, biopharmaceuticals and biological materials; Patents versus other forms of ownership such as: possession, gifting, bailment and copyright ownership; patent morality; the innovation/discovery divide; licensing and barriers to innovation proliferation.
