Work experience placements

We invite students for unpaid work experience placements from 3 - 12 months, offered on various projects.

Work experience will normally involve some or all of the following techniques: DNA extraction, estimation of DNA quality and concentration, PCR, use of an ABI 3730 DNA Analyzer for microsatellite genotyping, sequencing and genetic bird sex-typing.

Many of the projects are pilot studies for validating markers to use in conservation projects or involve investigations of population structure or parentage studies. For examples of the types of projects involved please see our Projects webpage.

Informal enquiries should be made to Dr Deborah Dawson (d.a.dawson@sheffield.ac.uk). Please provide a CV and state your specific interests.

The lab has a small number of placements available for work experience via the Sheffield Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) Scheme.

Applicants should be undergraduate or MSc students in their penultimate year and registered at the University of Sheffield.
