Thesis Title: The Criminality of Tobacco in Seventeenth-century England
Funded by: Wolfson Foundation Postgraduate Scholarship
Start Year: 2014
My research aims to cast a wide net over the seventeenth century and explore the criminal aspects connected to the production, trade, and consumption of tobacco. Specific illegal behavior included domestic cultivation, the importation of untaxed tobacco, unlicensed retailing, adulteration, and excessive consumption. I am particularly interested in how these practices may have changed or developed over the course of the century in relation to one another and the effects that they had on specific communities.
