Civil and Structural Engineering student nominated for National Undergraduate Employer Award

Congratulations to Civil and Structural Engineering student George Sheppard who has been nominated for the ‘Best Placement Student’ at the National Undergraduate Employer Awards.

Civil student George Sheppard

The award celebrates the amazing contribution that placement students make to businesses across the UK. Finalists have made a genuine, measurable impact to their business whilst on placement.

George said ‘I am really proud to have been recognised for my contributions throughout my Year in Industry Placement at Seven Trent. Despite the difficult circumstances imposed by Covid I was fortunate to complete the full placement and embraced all the challenges it brought.  I would highly recommend students consider completing a Year in Industry.’

George undertook a Year in Industry placement with Severn Trent working in the Capital Delivery & Commercial Engineering department. He worked on numerous wastewater treatment projects in a team delivering low pollution permits under the Water Framework Directive, and played a significant role in the successful delivery and handover of 4 projects. The contributions he made throughout his placement had a significant impact on his team and wider business.

Throughout his placement, George showed initiative and was proactive in taking action to ensure that projects were kept on schedule such as when he stepped in to complete the asset capitalisation process at Harby and Fleckney Sewage Treatment Works. He also volunteered to organise and edit his department’s new ‘Safety in Design Bulletin’ for which he collaborated with colleagues to compose articles highlighting best practice and latest innovations.  George’s contribution extended beyond Engineering during the Covid-19 lockdown, when he supported his team’s move online and initiated and organised team-building entertainment in the form of online ‘pub quizzes’ for his monthly team meetings - his effort was recognised by his team leader and was rewarded with an ‘Our Brilliant People’ Award.

Dr Rachel Horn of the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering who was George’s placement tutor said ‘ I’m delighted George has been shortlisted for such an award, his hard work and attitude are a credit to him and the department. He thoroughly deserves his nomination. It also shows the real benefit of doing a Year in Industry placement.’
