The Practice

We are a large inner city PMS practice situated in the south west of the city. We have a main surgery on Little London Road and a smaller branch surgery at the top of Blackstock Road. Due to this we have a large practice area extending from London Road up to Jordanthorpe and including Meersbrook, Norton and parts of the Gleadless Valley. The list size is approximately 10,500 patients and covers a wide mix of social and ethnic groups. We look after a couple of residential and nursing homes. We also cover one of the local EMI homes.

The main surgery moved to new purpose built premises in March 2010. Each registrar has their own (air conditioned!) training room and we have capacity to train 4 registrars.

We are fully computerised and a paperless practice. We use the System One clinical system and have a well developed practice intranet. Patients can book appointments on line as well as e mail prescription requests.

We provide all the usual services including child health surveillance, minor surgery and maternity care and are aiming to achieve a high point score in the quality and outcome framework of the new GP contract.

We take part in a number of local schemes including anticoagulation, DMARD monitoring, Osteoporosis care, implanon insertion, D-Dimer testing and the Care home LES

Our ‘out of hours’ cover is by the Sheffield GP Collaborative.

We have strong links with the Sheffield PCT with 2 of the partners taking an active role within the PCT.

Most appointments are bookable on the day with some reserved as ‘pre-bookables’. We all offer 10 minute appointments.

We became a training practice in August 2005.

The People

The practice was originally started by Dr Albert Sloan over 50 years ago and 3 of his daughters are partners today. However we now make up an 10 strong doctor team.

Marion Sloan has an interest in asthma and contraception as well as being the clinical governance lead at the PCT. She also performs endoscopy at both the Hallamshire and Northern General Hospitals and works regular sessions for the GP Collaborative.

Barbara Sloan has an interest in child health and maternity services as well as family planning and contraceptive services. She is also the practice CHD lead.

Linda Sloan is the practice lead in epilepsy as well as being the ‘financial’ lead within the practice.

David Greenstreet joined the practice in 1996 anda is one of the Trainers. He is the IT lead within the practice and has an interest in minor surgery. He is also the clinical governance lead for the practice as well as helping with education and development within the practice and the PCT as a primary care tutor. He also works regular sessions for the GP Collaborative and a GP appraiser.

Dominic Shirt joined the practice in 1997 and is the lead for diabetes. He is actively involved in medical student teaching both in the practice and for the university. He has also been involved in SHO (F2) training at the practice. He is one of the trainers and a GP appraiser.

Oliver Hart joined the practice in 2004 and works 6 sessions a week. He has an interest in minor surgery and works for the GP Collaborativ and Central Consortium PBC group.

Claire Freeman joined the practice in 2003 and works 1 session a week. She also works for the PCT as an appraiser.

We employ a large primary care team consisting of Practice Nurses, Practice Manager, IT Administrator, Secretaries and Admin staff as well as receptionists. There is also a team of District Nurses, Health Visitors, Midwifes, Physiotherapists and a PCT counsellor attached to the practice. We also have the services of a pharmacy advisor and a primary mental health care worker on a regular basis.

Training

There is an initial induction period of 2 weeks during which the registrar will meet and observe members of the health care team as well as getting an initial feel of General Practice (and our practice in particular!).

The Registrar has their own room, with all the usual equipment, the computer includes access to the practice Intranet as well as the Internet along with the clinical system. Initially appointments will be at least 20 minutes long though this will be reduced over time with experience. We have facilities to video consultations and this will be encouraged from an early stage in the training. As well as debriefing after every surgery there is a weekly tutorial as well as time for private study and audit work. There is also a half day, as well as the VTS half day release.

We have a strong tradition of education within the practice and hold regular weekly educational meetings for the whole team which the registrar will be expected to attend. We usually have at least one medical student attached to the practice at any one time and often undertake training of nursing students and other health care professionals.

For further information, contact either David Greenstreet or Dominic Shirt at the practice or Helen Proud, Practice Manager.
