Practice

Mill Road Surgery is a friendly and forward thinking practice which currently has 5100 patients and covers the surrounding areas of Ecclesfield, Chapeltown, High Green, Grenoside and Thorpe Hesley, with patients registered under Sheffield, Rotherham and Barnsley Family Health Services. 17% of the practice population is over 75 and we have responsibility for an EMI nursing home and a residential home. Our purpose built surgery is adjacent to park land and has a pleasant working environment. This is a fully computerised practice, data accredited for 3 years in 2008 and currently using TPP SystmOne clinical system. Protocols and Guidance can be accessed via the surgery’s electronic library. Out of Hours cover is currently provided by the GP Collaborative.

Personnel

There are 4 partners, 3 practice nurses, 2 healthcare assistants, a Practice Manager, Assistant Manager and 9 administration/reception staff. The Practice Nurses hold regular clinics for all the major chronic diseases. Additional services available at the practice include minor surgery, IUD and nexplanon fitting, physiotherapy, chiropody, occupational health, counselling, smoking cessation and health walks. We are also lucky to have health visitors and midwives running clinics at the practice. Our friendly and helpful administration team ensures the practice runs smoothly and efficiently.

The Registrar

We usually have 2 full-time and 1 part-time registrars and there are opportunities for working together. You will be ‘on-call’ for two half days each week, responsible for emergency phone calls, re-authorising repeat prescriptions and triage of visit requests. You do not have to participate in any extended hours at the surgery. There are 2 dedicated registrar consulting rooms, the practice provides all your equipment and you have access to video equipment for recording consultations.

Training

The practice is a longstanding and enthusiastic training practice, with both trainers being former VTS course organisers. The practice focuses on each registrar’s individual training needs and all practice staff are committed to helping you achieve these.

The Registrar has seven clinical surgeries per week, one session for personal study and dedicated time for project or audit work, in addition to Thursday GPSTP. Teaching is arranged by weekly tutorials which, when appropriate, will be shared with other GPRs with similar learning needs and are held in a dedicated teaching room with access to the Doctor’s library. One-to-one time will also be available each week with your trainer. In addition, debriefs are timetabled at the end of each surgery, with all partners sharing this responsibility and there is a named partner to offer support during your clinical sessions.

The partners surgery appointments are booked at 10-15 minute intervals and you will start with 20 minute appointments and work towards this. 1 or 2 home visits may be allocated to you each day.

There are weekly meetings which registrars are encouraged to attend alternating between clinical and partnership meetings.
