The Practice
We are a very friendly Practice situated in Parson Cross in Sheffield 5. Most of the patients live within a mile or two radius of the Practice. The majority of homes in this area are council houses with no highrise flats. We also cover the private Binsted Estate and some of Grenoside. The premises are new and purpose built. The size of the practice is approximately 4,650.
We run Open-Access (Drop in) surgeries every weekday morning and surgeries to appointment in the afternoon (except Thursday when the surgery is closed). We also run a once weekly surgery at one of the local residential homes for the elderly. We are happy to care for the medical needs of drug addicts but do not prescribe maintenance treatment.
Clinics are held regularly at the Practice in addition to the usual surgery times. The clinics include Well Woman, Well Baby, Ante-natal, Asthma, Diabetic, District Nurse Clinic, Coronary Prevention, Minor Operations and Warts, Physiotherapy and Chiropody. Clinics are run by appointment.
On-call is mainly covered by Sheffield Out of Hours Collaborative. Dr Charlton works 2 Saturday mornings per month at the OOH service.
The Practice is fully computerised. The computers are used during regular consultations.
Practice Staff include:
3 Receptionists
4 Receptionist/Secretaries
1 Practice Manager
1 Finance Manager
3 Practice Nurses
1 Physiotherapist
1 Chiropodist
1 Occupational Health Worker
1 Practice Counsellor
2 Domestic helpers
The District Nurses are based at the Practice and the Midwife holds a weekly clinic. The Health Visitors are based at the Childrens' Centre next door to the surgery.
Regular meetings of the primary health care team take place.
The Partners
There are four Partners, Dr Heather Charlton, Dr Sandra Emerson, Dr Lucy Cormack and Dr Rachel Stokes. All are involved in the regular work at the surgery. Dr Charlton runs the Asthma Clinic. Dr Emerson runs the Well Baby Clinic. We also take medical students regularly at the Practice.
The Registrar
The registrar has his/her own room. There is a 2 week introductory period at the beginning of each attachment. As there is no appointment system for morning surgeries, the registrar’s consultation time here is flexible. However the registrar usually increases their ability to work faster and take on more work as the months progress. They are never asked to consult at less than 10 minute intervals. Below is a detailed timetable to give details of the registrar's working commitment.
Teaching
The registrar debriefs after each surgery. All the doctors meet after morning surgery and have opportunities to discuss issues. There is a regular tutorial each week lasting for one to one and a half hours. This is normally with Dr Charlton but may be with another member of the primary care team.
Aims
As a Practice we aim to give a high standard of medical care to all our patients. We have good relationships with the primary health care team and our patients, encouraged by mutual respect. The Doctors aim to work in a similar way to one another following Management Protocols for many conditions. We stress the importance of a healthy lifestyle including not smoking, weight reduction, regular exercise and a non drug approach to psychological problems.
