We are a friendly and welcoming multidisciplinary team. We enjoy working together, pride ourselves on good communication and organisation and share a commitment to providing good patient care. All attached staff have pigeonholes where messages and referrals can be left. We hold weekly multi-disciplinary meetings to discuss patients and fortnightly clinical meetings to discuss clinical issues and the journal club. Practice meetings are held 6 weekly. Registrars are encouraged to attend all meetings. We have the benefit of System one and are very forward thinking in all aspects of IT. See our blog!

Where are we?

The practice has a very compact urban practice area including Crookes and also Walkley, Crosspool and Netherthorpe. The practice is happy to see anyone living within the practice boundary and we also offer contraceptive and drug misuse services to patients outside our area.

The practice is housed in 2 large converted houses and was extended and modified in 1997 to provide a spacious and attractive working environment. The GPR has a dedicated room with facilities for video recording and editing. The list size is currently 7798 and growing slowly. There is a high turnover of patients. The housing is mostly small terraced housing and the practice population mostly social class 2 and 3 with 7% over 75.

What do we do?

In addition to daily surgeries with both doctors and nurses, the practice offers a number of other services and clinics detailed in the practice leaflet. All surgeries are by appt (10 mins for doctors and nurses). There are a number of slots available for doctors and nurses bookable on the day, and up to one month in advance also we offer internet booking. The GPR is always supervised by one of the partners. We share visits equally and on average do 2 visits daily. Most GPRs will do one afternoon on call a week when they act as the duty doctor and mostly do triage and on call work. We are committed to training and have been a training practice for many years. The staff is particularly used to helping and supporting the registrar. We also take medical students on a regular basis. We are a fully computerised, paper-free practice and all newcomers are trained to use the computer system. We currently use System One. We have rapid access to the Internet with a networked system with on screen BNF, minor ops, leaflets, protocols and formulary.

The practice has a policy of prescribing for opiate and we have approx 33 such patients on the list. The GPR is not expected to participate in this work but can use their time here to gain an understanding of the issues involved. The practice uses the Sheffield Collaborative for out of hours worked and sessions can be arranged with the trainer and other partners as required. The partnership team has recently undergone many changes due to retirement and partners seeking other horizons and is now a very youthful team with a strong desire to plan together the education and development of the practice with particular regard to standards of clinical excellence. In the past we developed practice objectives which may be reviewed and updated by the new partnership team.

What about the training?

All the partners are involved in delivering the training. We encourage the use of video analysis and support the audit and video components of summative assessment as well as the MRCGP video component. We expect a full time GPR to do 7 clinical sessions and have one half-day study, one half day for the Half-day release course and one half day. There is an approximately 2 week induction period into the practice. There are 2 scheduled tutorials each week with daily debriefing. The GPR is expected to contribute with prepared work to the journal club and tutorials. There is a learning contract and we use a standard BMA model trainee contract with an additional computer security contract.

The Crookes Practice is a training practice. There is a GP registrar attached to the practice. S/he is a fully qualified doctor getting specialist training in general practice. On occasions s/he may video their consultations, with your consent, for training purposes. We also teach nursing and medical students. Part of their training is to sit in on consultations and we would ask for your co-operation. But if you would prefer that the student was not present please don’t hesitate to say so.

A comprehensive Induction Programme is given with an agreed timetable for your working pattern. If you require any more information please contact our Business Manager at
