Practice Population: 8,300 approx.
Patients per Doctor (FTE): 1625
Location: South East Sheffield, approximately 5 miles from the city centre. The practice area includes part of the suburbs of Birley, Frecheville and Hackenthorpe.
Demographics: The practice population is predominantly white working class, skewed towards the older age range. There is an above average prevalence of many chronic diseases such as CHD, COPD, and Diabetes.
Size: Compact, roughly rectangular area, ¾ x ⅝ mile in extent. Small number of patients outside the official area.
Building: Purpose built, opened in 1992 and extended in 1996. There are 14 consulting rooms, a well-equipped Treatment Room, Health Education Room and Library/Meeting Room. Everything but the Library is on the ground floor and accessible. The building is designed to have exceptionally low energy use and makes extensive use of natural light, making it a pleasant and comfortable place to work.
There is a Pharmacy adjacent to the surgery.
Special Features: Birley Health Centre was a pioneer of integrated health care and practice staff work very closely with the Community Nursing and Health Visiting teams who work out of the building. We have worked to develop new services which include daily nurse-led minor illness clinics, an extensive programme of chronic disease management and management of anti-coagulation treatment for our patients. Two of the partners are leading contributors to South East Sheffield´s development work in Palliative Care and Young Peoples´ issues. Clinical sessions are provided by a range of visiting practitioners, including physiotherapy, podiatry, Mental Health and Occupational Health. The Health Centre hosts a weekly surgery of the Citizens´ Advice Bureau. We regularly train medical students and Community Nurse Team Leader is a Community Educator. Partners and Practice Manager are active in the PBC Consortium.

As a practice we believe strongly in the principles and purpose of General Practice and strive towards high standards of care for our patients. We are strongly motivated to provide the environment and encouragement for registrars to develop suitable skills to attain similar high standards of care and effective methods for continuing medical education.

Appointments System:
Some morning appointments (and a small number of afternoon appointments) for GPs and Nurse Practitioners are available on the day. Afternoon appointments can be booked in advance.
Practice nurse appointments are booked in advance.
When all appointments are taken, urgent cases will be seen in sit and wait sessions at 12 noon and 5 p.m.
Most GP Appointments are 10 minutes in 2-hour surgeries.
Visits and telephone advice are made after morning surgery.
Duty Doctor
Each of the partners acts as Duty Doctor on one day each week and will provide telephone advice to patients, conduct the emergency overspill session at 5 p.m and deal with urgent matters arising through the day. The GP Registrar will be asked to do on call towards the end of their placement (with a partner for back up).
IT
We use System One. Most results are handled via the LabLinks system and hospital letters and other documents are scanned and managed using the Passport Document Management System. We have implemented the Choose & Book System and are progressing towards paperlight status.
Out of Hours
We are opted in to OOH provision which is provided by the Sheffield GP Collaborative. Four of the partners do out-of-hours sessions for the Collaborative to which the GP Registrar is invited to attend.
The Partners:
Dr Dilys Noble: Dilys qualified in 1970 in Sheffield University, spent time working in Mission Hospital in Ghana, returned to spend several years in hospital Paediatrics, with family commitments 4 children became a part time GP Trainee at Birley in 1982 and Partner in 1985. Interests in Paediatrics and Women´s Health, is named doctor in Child Protection for SE PCT.
Dr Charles Heatley: Charles qualified in Glasgow in 1986, did a medical rotation and a year of infectious diseases before making his own VTS, all in and around Glasgow, before moving to Sheffield in 1993. He has had experience in primary care research, has interests in mental health and cardiology, and tends to be the one who speaks with and for the PCT in the surgery.
Dr Michael Boyle: Qualified in Sheffield in 1989, MRC GP in 1993. Special Interest Undergraduate Training, Mental Health, Minor Surgery and Cardio-Vascular Medicine. Michael is also an examiner for the University of Sheffield.
Dr Gawain Davies: Gawain qualified in 1988 form Sheffield University. After spending time in New Zealand, he finished his GP training in 1994. He joined the practice in June 1997. Gawain enjoys the variety of problems encountered in General Practice and his special interests include Sports Medicine (in which he has a post graduate diploma) and joint and muscle problems. When not at work Gawain enjoys family life and most sports. Despite being a rugby player all his life, he was converted to football by his son and he has been spotted several times at Bramall Lane…… but he is still happy to see Wednesday supporters!
Dr Sarah Allen: Sarah qualified in Manchester in 1986. It was not until 1998 that she finished her training in General Practice having spent most of that time raising her family of 4 children. She joined Birley Health Centre as a part-time partner in May 2000. Her main interests are in Palliative Care, for which she is the SE PCT lead, and diabetes. She runs Baby Clinic & Antenatal Clinic jointly with Dr Noble.
Salaried GP:
Dr Jane Jamieson: Jane qualified as a doctor at Manchester University and held hospital appointments in Preston and Blackpool and trained for General Practice in Preston. She worked in Practices in Preston and Sheffield before coming to Birley. Dr Jamieson has also spent some time in Thailand with a Christian missionary organisation.
Dr Helena Galpin: Helena qualified in Sheffield in 2001 and completed Sheffield VTS and MRCGP in 2006. Her main interests are in Substance Misuse and Palliative Care.
Nurse Practitioners:
Minion Green: Minion qualified as a Registered Nurse in 1970 and became a Practice Nurse in Birley in 1966, After gaining a B Med Sci (Hons) in Practice Nursing in 1966, she qualified as a Nurse Specialist. Minion is now a Nurse Practitioner and conducts Minor Illness Clinics. Her clinical interests include Chronic Disease Management in hypertension, CHD, COPD and asthma. Her role also includes menopause, cytology, contraception, and smoking cessation, venepuncture and wound care.
Jacqueline Weston: Jackie completed nurse training in Sheffield in 1972 and has worked as a Practice Nurse since 1983. She has a B Med Sci in Practice nursing. Her special interests are Minor Illness, Diabetes, Travel, Aural Care and Childhood Immunisations.
Practice Nurses
Karen Rhodes: Qualified as a nurse in 1982 working as a Staff Nurse in Rheumatology and the Community before moving into Practice Nursing in 2000. Completed Diploma´s in Asthma and COPD and is a trained Smoking Cessation Advisor. Recently completed the Oral Anticoagulation Management Course. Karen´s specialist interests are Asthma, COPD, CHD and Anticoagulation Monitoring.
Sarah Newton: Qualified as a Registered Nurse in 1989 and a registered Sick Childrens Nurse in 1992. Worked in Lincolnshire on Childrens Ward until returning to Sheffield in 1994. Sarah worked on a childrens ward at Chesterfield RH until moving to General Practice in 2002. Special interests include Diabetes, Childhood Immunisations and Aural Care.

Structure of the Day: The morning consists of a surgery from 9.00 to 11.00 a.m. followed by an hour for project work and a debriefing session with one or more of the partners. One day will involve a joint session, usually with Trainer, followed by a tutorial. Afternoons will be varied with VTS, Clinical and Management Meetings, PLI Sessions, Baby Clinic or an afternoon surgery on different days. At all times there will be the opportunity to consult with the trainer, duty doctor or another partner if necessary.
On-call: Opportunity to shadow trainer and other partners for Collaborative sessions and as the daily duty doctor.
Consultation Time: 15 minute slots initially, moving to 10 minutes when ready.
Accommodation: Will have own consulting room with PC, printer and all medical equipment needed for consultations. Facilities for video recording and review are available. Access to well-stocked library.
