The Practice
List Size: The Practice capitation hovers around 10700 (which gives an average of 1650 patients per whole-time doctor). There is no reason to expect any great change to these figures in the near future.
Location: Less than a mile from city centre, close to Bramall Lane and London Road.
Age/Sex: The Practice has roughly equal numbers of male and female patients.
There are slightly above average numbers in the 50 to 65 year old group. We are currently aware of this group with the implication of increasing health care needs as this population ages.
Practice Development: We were the first practice in Sheffield to obtain Commitment to Quality and this commitment to developing and demonstrating excellence remains part of the practice aims.
Ethnic Mix: 801 patients are recorded as originating from other countries. There has been a reticence in recording this data, so we believe the figure to be much higher. We have in house interpreters to help with our many Urdu, Cantonese and Mandarin speaking patients. We have a substantial Bangladeshi population, some of whom have been in the area for at least 2 generations. Recently we have had refugees from Somalia, Kosovo and Albania… and many more.
We are a 2 site practice. The Belgrave Medical Centre premises were a new build in 1993 and are well utilised and there are no plans at this time for any alterations. White Lane premises are the typical old style practice in a converted house. At present both trainers and registrars work from the modern Belgrave Medical Centre site. The GP registrars have their own consulting rooms, though like many busy surgeries, others use the room when they are not present. Being on one site ensures continuity of care with the patients and attached members of the primary care team. Everyone in the Practice is supportive of the idea of training and this gives the GP registrars a broad base of experience.
Both surgeries are computerised and we are paper light. We use the EMIS software system. We are connected to the NHS net.
We have an operating theatre in which minor surgery is performed under local anaesthetic several partners have a surgical background and operating is done for the locality and from time to time also for the dermatologists.
We have very long established antenatal, child health surveillance and well-woman clinics, together with diabetic and asthma clinics. We run anti-coagulation clinics and COPD clinics and cover almost all LES areas. We also have excellent access to all haematology, biochemistry, bacteriology and pathology. There is also an open access endoscopy service and communications between the hospitals and the Practice are good. We have a fax machine for urgent communication and referral.
Appointment System: : Patients can see the doctor of their choice by appointment. GPs consult at 10 minute intervals. Registrars will start on longer appointments and will be supported to work down towards 10 minutes, the time this takes will vary.
There is a doctor led triage system to support improved access.
Urgent cases are seen the same day, but not always by the doctor of their choice.
On-Call: We currently have an all inclusive contract with the GP Collaborative. The actual on-call for the partners and registrars is as follows:
Mondays to Wednesdays & Fridays - 07.00 to 18.00
Thursdays - 07.00 to 12.00
Weekends - closed
All other times are covered by the Collaborative.
Other Information:
The timetable we offer is adjusted to fit the COGPED recommendations of 3 educational and 7 clinical sessions for a full timer and is EWTD compliant. We try to arrange the timetable so that there is overlap with one or both of the trainers as much as possible for continuity of input.
We encourage the GP registrars to use video to assess their own consultations. We also develop a tutorial programme based on specific needs.
We have protected time for tutorial and regular assessments. The GP registrars will also be encouraged to perform audit and be supported in any research they may wish to undertake. We also encourage attendance at relevant clinics or postgraduate assessments on their specific needs as part of study leave.
The Practice is keen to develop a high quality of service to its patients and is wholly committed to the National Health Service. We believe that general practice and the development of effective primary care is an exciting and rewarding pursuit and look forward to finding ways of developing the service in the best interests of the patients.
