A one day ENT course is run by the Scheme annually as part of the hospital group teaching timetable. It is therefore not available to ST1 trainees in GP placements.
The course is only open to trainees on the Sheffield GP Speciality Training Programme.
Course Objectives
On successful completion of the course, delegates should be able to:
- Make an accurate diagnosis of recurrent tonsillitis and peritonsillar abscess, and understand the SIGN criteria for tonsillectomy
- Describe the acute treatment for suspected Bell’s Palsy, and when referral is indicated for this condition
- Describe the Unterberger test and how it is interpreted
- Explain the rationale behind ENT “red-flag” symptoms
- Describe several causes of non-otological otalgia
- Describe diagnosis and treatment of 5 different causes of facial pain
- Perform and interpret tuning fork tests
- Discriminate vertiginous from non-vertiginous “dizzy” patients
- Know what a BAHA is and when it may be indicated
- Describe a rational approach to the assessment and management of the discharging ear
- Competently assess and treat the rhinitic patient in primary care
- Explain the role of LPR in Globus Pharyngeus/Larygospasm and throat clearing and how it is treated
- Administer and interpret the Berlin Questionnaire for OSA
- Advise patients on treatment options for snoring
- Describe the basic principles of Tinnitus Retraining Therapy
- Confidently identify a nasal polyp and prescribe medical treatment
- Describe the management of serous otitis media, including referral criteria
- Understand how to perform nasal cautery for recurrent anterior epistaxis.
