Who are the Student Officers?

The student officers are eight students, elected by the whole student population, who work full time at the Students' Union for a year.

I WANT CHANGE!

What do Councillors Do?

Councillors have two main responsibilities: to debate and decide the policies of the Students' Union and to represent the views of students from their department or representative group.

Debate and Decide

The elected Councillors attend Students' Union Council meetings once a fortnight. They discuss and debate a huge range of issues relating to students.

Examples:

  • the environmental standards of the Students' Union
  • the increase in Higher Education fees
  • the safety of the University campus
  • the closure of academic departments and much more...

Students' Union Council votes on issues and makes big decisions to bring about change for Sheffield students - whether it's proposing to ban the sale of bottled water in the Students' Union or organizing a group of 700 students to attend the NUS 'Cuts are Nuts' demo.

The policies due for review in the 2011/12 academic year are:

  • Nestle
  • Education Funding
  • Environmental

Represent

Each Councillor is democratically elected to Students' Union Council through the votes of students in their department or their representative group.

  • Representative Councillors provide a voice for underrepresented student groups: Women, Black, LGBT, Mature, Disabled, International, Postgrad Taught, Postgrad Research.
  • Representative Councillors attend the meetings of their respective committees to connect to and understand the interests of the group they represent.
  • Departmental Councillors are elected by students in their department to represent them to the Students' Union.
  • Departmental Councillors attend the Staff-Student Committee in their department. These are usually twice a semester and are also attended by Course Reps.
  • Departmental Councillors are expected to liaise with Course Reps and communicate with students in their department to engage them in the issues Students' Union Council debates.
