About
Hello, I'm Philip and I'm the Students' Union Councillor for the Department of Town and Regional Planning. I'm a 3rd Year Masters in Planning (MPlan) Student and I'm honoured to have been elected to represent all TRP students for this academic year.
Council is the Union’s decision making body, yet students are neither consulted about votes, nor are they aware that they are happening. This lack of accountability makes the Union seem like a closed shop, when actually we should all have a say in how it is run. I'm seeking to reverse this by actively consulting TRP students on the issues they wish to be raised in meetings, along with seeking their views on agenda items. I see this post as a representative role, and therefore I'm not seeking to push a personal agenda.
This page is for you to contact me with any concerns or queries, no matter how big or small. Do not underestimate the power you have - I really want to hear your views as frequently as possible You have the ability to get in contact with me and share your concerns. I can then take these in front of the Union Council on your behalf and make change happen
Feel free to get in contact with me on the email address above.
• If you have an issue with a module then I will respond to the lecturer in question - I'm quite successful in moving deadlines!
• Something you'd like to see changed in the Department? I sit on Staff Student Committee and I'd love to hear your suggestions for how we can improve as a department!
• Keen to see the Union recognise an issue, or for them to change a policy? Students' Union Council makes all the decisions and we even hold the elected Union Officers to account - along with the rest of Council I've got the power!
• Got a problem with the University themselves? Union Council regularly lobby the University, and even if I can't take it forward first hand - I'll lobby Union President Thom Arnold on your behalf.
• Have an issue, but you don't know who to take it up with? Hopefully I will know, and if I don't know then I will find out for you and make sure it happens!
Latest Updates
I'm strongly lobbying the Union to change the voting rules relating to Dual Honours students. Currently Geography & Planning students aren't recognised by the Union as dual honours students, but only as Planners. I'm also helping our department to bring ourselves closer to the Geography department.
I'm in the process of radically overhauling MOLE 2 so that it can feature a forum for all TRP students to anonymously leave comments queries or concerns. It's taking a while, but I promise it will be done this side of Christmas and that when it is, it will be excellent!
I'm keen to break down barriers to help connect international students with home students and I'm using this role and my role as Inclusion Officer of PlanningSoc to assist in this.
Finally I’m keen to make the Union more accountable for students, and I’m trying to amend the constitution to do this.
