International Students

Councillor: Nathalie Galfrascoli

Email: intstudscouncillor@shef.ac.uk

About

Hi! Hola! Salut! I'm Nathalie Galfrascoli, your International Students' Councillor for 2012/2013. I represent the views and concerns of all international students at the University of Sheffield, which are all registered members of our Students' Union! Please feel free to get in touch by dropping me an e-mail or by visiting my councillor facebook page: SheffieldUnion InternationalCouncillor at http://www.facebook.com/sheffieldunion.internationalcouncillor if you have any issues concerning you during your studies! Our Representative Committee, also known as the ISC (International Students' Committee), is here to help too! They normally meet every Tuesday afternoon in one of the Students' Union rooms. If you would like to get in touch with them, e-mail isc@sheffield.ac.uk! There are many ways to get involved including running for a committee position at their annual AGM, joining one of their working committees and helping organize an event or simply by popping by to say hi! They are a bunch of very friendly people so do not hesitate to approach them anytime!

Latest Updates

I will be posting my councillor updates over here after every Council meeting, which happens fortnightly every Thursday evening at 5.15 p.m. at the Tapestry Room in Firth Court. Every other Thursday, councillors also get together for interactive workshops including sessions on cultural awareness and library usage.  Sessions are normally run by an external member of staff and councillors have the chance to propose changes to the University's and the Union's existing services. If you have any ideas, please get in touch!

April 2013
In terms of representation, the International Students' campaign has succeeded with the highlight of it being the campaign video of "We are all international students" available on YouTube and presented to Parliament alongside outstanding research evidence that international students continue to make Sheffield a rich, exciting and multicultural community! If you haven't done so already, you can find the video by following this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsX_yg6ovoI
As for international events, the latest ISC annual events have also proved to be a success! World week continues to get better year after year! And no better way to end an amazing week with the 3rd edition of the International Language Festival! I was also delighted to see a promising number of attendees at the Open cafe charity event last Thursday collaborating towards the Syrian appeal.
Finally, I have helped to promote the new Global campus page and a series of events with a "global focus" coming up including the first Open space event happening on the 1st of May  and the next BME student forum on the 26th of April.
Keep your eyes open for the International Students' Committee's final event of the year, International Cultural Evening (ICE)!

February 2013
Visited my Facebook profile to check for any messages, posts, updates from students but everything seems to be in order and no issues were raised. No significant changes have been made since the beginning of the Christmas break due to holiday and exam periods. I am keeping everyone on the loop about the next Council meeting on the 5th of February and promised to deliver an update/outline of any issues discussed concerning international students.
I am looking forward to participating in the "International Students' campaign" that Fadi has been planning for the second semester. Keep your eyes open for the International Students' Committee's final event of the year, International Cultural Evening (ICE), which promises to be even bigger this year, with the possibility of it taking place in City Hall...! Check out the ISC profile on facebook for more information on events and activities happening during the second semester!

October-December 2012
No issues were raised by students through my facebook profile or in person. However, I have been keen on getting involved with several projects, including the renewal of the Union housing policy, the upcoming campaign for international students and the Reclaim your Education campaign. In reference to these three points:
1) I attended a “brainstorming session” with some of the councillors and Jon Gleek and discussed how to amend the housing policy that was eventually passed my council a few weeks ago.
2) I am now part of the team who will be running the “Campaign for International Students” (name subject to change) along with Abdi, Fadi, Tilak (chair of the ISC) and Farwah (chair of ISC welfare) during the second semester. We had a meeting with Jo Holiday (International Student Advisor, Advice centre) and discussed the content of the campaign and how to get more people on board.
3) I stood for international students at the Demo 2012 in London last week. The turnout of internationals from Sheffield was quite poor, even though I had around 5/6 internationals marching with me. It was hard to convince them to come and scare away the fear they had of being deported/arrested by the police. The protest turned out to be peaceful and we had no issues on the way.
In addition, I was present at the meeting to amend the policy regarding the Cyprus issue, along with Fadi and 4 representatives from the two societies. They reached an agreement and the new amended version of the policy will be presented to Council on our next meeting.
PS. World Food festival, which took place last Saturday at City Hall, was a big success! :)

Latest Updates

April 2013:
  • April saw the Students' Union host its first ever LGBT Forum!  The Forum was used to discuss the Gay and Trans* friendly policy, the prospect of part time liberation officers and the LGBT Lounge.  It was great to get input from students who weren't already actively involved with the LGBT Committee and is hopefully something that can be run several times a year.
  • In other news, I helped LGBT Committee to run their AGM and a new committee was elected on the 10th!  I also attended the second liberation forum where we discussed working space for liberation committees; running campaigns on hate crime; and a proposal to ask the University to review toilet provisions in University buildings: particularly gender neutral toilets!
  • I'm off to NUS LGBT Conference on the 19th so expect an update on how that went next time!

Feb 2013:
  • Ideas are in the pipeline for collaborative events between LGBT Committee and Women's Committee for international women's week, as well as a potential panel discussion with women's committee surrounding how to create a diverse representative feminist movement at the students' union.
  • I helped LGBT Committee run/publicise a number of events throughout LGBT history month, including collaboration with debating society, politics society and EAS soc.  The coming month should see a focus group set up to discuss the gay and trans* friendly policy, as well as an action plan to lobby Sheffield City Council on Gender Neutral Toilets.

January 2013:
  • Having received almost 500 responses to the survey on Gender Neutral Toilets, I wrote a report on the findings which was circulated among Students' Union and University staff.  The report is available on the LGBT Committee website.  Since this, I have met with the internal campaigns rep on the LGBT Committee to discuss how we intend to increase GNT provision across campus: we are currently working on a plan to lobby both the University and Sheffield City Council on the matter.
  • I attended the first liberation forum in December and am currently working with both LGBT campaigns reps on several planned joint campaigns between the liberation committees at the Students' Union.  I have also met up with members of the LGBT Committee to organise setting up a forum to discuss the gay and trans* friendly policy.

November 2012:

  • Over the last month I have been working alongside the LGBT Committee with their ongoing campaign raising money for SMUG (Sexual Minorities Uganda).  We have been actively building relationships between LGBT Committee and Faith societies within the Students' Union, and are hosting November's Interfaith Cafe (21st Nov).
  • I sent out a University-wide email asking students for their feedback on the Gender Neutral Toilets that were introduced last year.  Once all the responses have been collected I will be producing a report on the impact of the GNTs, including potential recommendations.
  • I have been interviews on Forge Radio about the Out in Sport report produced by the NUS LGBT campaign.  In the coming year, NUS LGBT are aiming to produce a toolkit for universities to campaign against homophobia, biphobia and transphobia in sport.  Once this is released I intend to work with the LGBT Committee to challenge these issues within the Students' Union.

Women Students

Councillor: Lucy Pedrick

About

Hi! I'm Lucy Pedrick, and I'm your Women's Councillor for 2012/13. I am a second year European and International Law student. Please feel free to add my Women's Councillor facebook page in order to keep properly up to date with what is happening that affects you in Council.

Latest Updates

So far as women's councillor, I've been trying to find my feet. With such a large group of people to represent (around 13,000), I've had my
work cut out trying to establish ways of communicating best with women students. Mainly, I've used the councillor facebook profile that was
set up by my predecessor, which seems to work reasonably well. Additionally I have tried increasingly to stop and speak to women
students. If you would like to speak to me and haven't yet had the opportunity, please feel free to message my facebook profile (link above) or send me an email!

One of my main focusses, given the significant impact of some of our recent Council discussions on women in particular, has been to communicate before
meetings what we will be discussing in order to encourage women students to attend Council and observe (anyone can observe Council meetings, they happen every other Thursday at 5.15pm in Firth Court Tapestry Room), and then explain how and why I voted afterwards. If you have any concerns or queries about how I have been voting, please do get in contact.

A woman student also recently approached me about bringing a motion to boycott the Sun as part of the national "No More Page 3" campaign, and
I will be bringing a proposal soon accordingly. If you have any issues that you think need to be better highlighted in the Union, or in Council in particular, please do not hesitate to contact me.
