The student officers are eight students, elected by the whole student population, who work full time at the Students' Union for a year.

Hi! Hola! Salut! I'm Nathalie Galfrascoli, your International Students' Councillor for 2012/2013. I represent the views and concerns of all international students at the University of Sheffield, which are all registered members of our Students' Union! Please feel free to get in touch by dropping me an e-mail or by visiting my councillor facebook page: SheffieldUnion InternationalCouncillor at http://www.facebook.com/sheffieldunion.internationalcouncillor if you have any issues concerning you during your studies! Our Representative Committee, also known as the ISC (International Students' Committee), is here to help too! They normally meet every Tuesday afternoon in one of the Students' Union rooms. If you would like to get in touch with them, e-mail isc@sheffield.ac.uk! There are many ways to get involved including running for a committee position at their annual AGM, joining one of their working committees and helping organize an event or simply by popping by to say hi! They are a bunch of very friendly people so do not hesitate to approach them anytime!
I will be posting my councillor updates over here after every Council meeting, which happens fortnightly every Thursday evening at 5.15 p.m. at the Tapestry Room in Firth Court. Every other Thursday, councillors also get together for interactive workshops including sessions on cultural awareness and library usage. Sessions are normally run by an external member of staff and councillors have the chance to propose changes to the University's and the Union's existing services. If you have any ideas, please get in touch!
April 2013
In terms of representation, the International Students' campaign has succeeded with the highlight of it being the campaign video of "We are all international students" available on YouTube and presented to Parliament alongside outstanding research evidence that international students continue to make Sheffield a rich, exciting and multicultural community! If you haven't done so already, you can find the video by following this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fsX_yg6ovoI
As for international events, the latest ISC annual events have also proved to be a success! World week continues to get better year after year! And no better way to end an amazing week with the 3rd edition of the International Language Festival! I was also delighted to see a promising number of attendees at the Open cafe charity event last Thursday collaborating towards the Syrian appeal.
Finally, I have helped to promote the new Global campus page and a series of events with a "global focus" coming up including the first Open space event happening on the 1st of May and the next BME student forum on the 26th of April.
Keep your eyes open for the International Students' Committee's final event of the year, International Cultural Evening (ICE)!
February 2013
Visited my Facebook profile to check for any messages, posts, updates from students but everything seems to be in order and no issues were raised. No significant changes have been made since the beginning of the Christmas break due to holiday and exam periods. I am keeping everyone on the loop about the next Council meeting on the 5th of February and promised to deliver an update/outline of any issues discussed concerning international students.
I am looking forward to participating in the "International Students' campaign" that Fadi has been planning for the second semester. Keep your eyes open for the International Students' Committee's final event of the year, International Cultural Evening (ICE), which promises to be even bigger this year, with the possibility of it taking place in City Hall...! Check out the ISC profile on facebook for more information on events and activities happening during the second semester!
October-December 2012
No issues were raised by students through my facebook profile or in person. However, I have been keen on getting involved with several projects, including the renewal of the Union housing policy, the upcoming campaign for international students and the Reclaim your Education campaign. In reference to these three points:
1) I attended a “brainstorming session” with some of the councillors and Jon Gleek and discussed how to amend the housing policy that was eventually passed my council a few weeks ago.
2) I am now part of the team who will be running the “Campaign for International Students” (name subject to change) along with Abdi, Fadi, Tilak (chair of the ISC) and Farwah (chair of ISC welfare) during the second semester. We had a meeting with Jo Holiday (International Student Advisor, Advice centre) and discussed the content of the campaign and how to get more people on board.
3) I stood for international students at the Demo 2012 in London last week. The turnout of internationals from Sheffield was quite poor, even though I had around 5/6 internationals marching with me. It was hard to convince them to come and scare away the fear they had of being deported/arrested by the police. The protest turned out to be peaceful and we had no issues on the way.
In addition, I was present at the meeting to amend the policy regarding the Cyprus issue, along with Fadi and 4 representatives from the two societies. They reached an agreement and the new amended version of the policy will be presented to Council on our next meeting.
PS. World Food festival, which took place last Saturday at City Hall, was a big success! :)

Hi! I'm Lucy Pedrick, and I'm your Women's Councillor for 2012/13. I am a second year European and International Law student. Please feel free to add my Women's Councillor facebook page in order to keep properly up to date with what is happening that affects you in Council.
So far as women's councillor, I've been trying to find my feet. With such a large group of people to represent (around 13,000), I've had my
work cut out trying to establish ways of communicating best with women students. Mainly, I've used the councillor facebook profile that was
set up by my predecessor, which seems to work reasonably well. Additionally I have tried increasingly to stop and speak to women
students. If you would like to speak to me and haven't yet had the opportunity, please feel free to message my facebook profile (link above) or send me an email!
One of my main focusses, given the significant impact of some of our recent Council discussions on women in particular, has been to communicate before
meetings what we will be discussing in order to encourage women students to attend Council and observe (anyone can observe Council meetings, they happen every other Thursday at 5.15pm in Firth Court Tapestry Room), and then explain how and why I voted afterwards. If you have any concerns or queries about how I have been voting, please do get in contact.
A woman student also recently approached me about bringing a motion to boycott the Sun as part of the national "No More Page 3" campaign, and
I will be bringing a proposal soon accordingly. If you have any issues that you think need to be better highlighted in the Union, or in Council in particular, please do not hesitate to contact me.
