Latest Updates

Phewww! Well, we had our second Staff Student Committee meeting this week. This is where your Course Reps get together with me and Poppy and we talk about everything we feel needs changing in the department. We base this on your views, so make sure you speak to your Course Rep if there's anything you want to bring up!

Since our first meeting, this is what has been changed in our Department:

- We will be getting a designed IT specialist starting next September to deal with all things Englishy on MUSE. This person will be making sure that our change-over to MOLE 2 runs as smoothly as possible and generally making sure everything goes to plan for English as a whole! This includes creating screencasts to help us learn how to use JStor, STAR library and all other similar services.

- Changes will be made regarding Personal Tutors. You will be getting clearer and more in-depth feedback on essays. Personal tutors will also be on hand to provide careers advice that is tailored to you. Overall, you will be getting more out of your tutor than you currently do. Personal Tutors are a valuable resource while you are at University, so make sure you make the most of their knowledge!

- Dual students will have much more representation than you do now. There will be designated dual student mentors to make sure that you are getting the most out of your course and that nothing is causing a problem for you. The School of English is employing a Dual students director to oversee the timetabling of dual students' courses. This will ensure that there are no clashes with other modules, giving you the choice you should be entitled to in the first place. This also applies for your exams...your director will be working hard to make sure that exam clashes do not occur, giving you the well-needed extra time to revise for each module!

This week's meeting (30th Nov 2011):

- We discussed having add/drop forms completely online. We are also looking into having typed feedback on your essays so it is easy to read.

- We will be introducing a Module Fair to give you the opportunity to discuss next year's modules before you sign up to them. Hopefully this way you won't have to faff around with add/drop forms!

- We discussed looking into ways that we can make Language, Linguistics, Literature and Theatre more integrated. We all from the same department at the end of the day, and it'd be fab if we got to spend more time as a unit instead of being segregated. This goes for lecturers as well. We want to make lecturers more accessible, so we will be finding ways to do this too!

- We are researching how we can provide more career-focused information for English students while working alongside the Careers Service.

- We are trying to find a way of making module preferences a little less stressful! Hopefully being more aware of the modules through the Module Fair will help. We are also trying to implement 'taster' seminars in Fresher's Week, so you are more aware of what the module will be like.

Hopefully you all like the sound of the things we are trying to change on your behalf. If you have any questions or suggestions then PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get in touch! Email me on my address above or get in touch with your Course Rep.

Your Course Reps are doing a fantastic job this year, and they are there to make sure you are happy in your studies.

I'll update you on any changes as soon as I can! :)
