The student officers are eight students, elected by the whole student population, who work full time at the Students' Union for a year.

Represents the views and interests of all women students within the Students' Union and University as well as at a national level and creates a student environment free from sexism and discrimination.
Works with the Women's Committee to lead campaigns on the issues of women's rights and equality.
Hi, I'm Amy your Women's Officer. I have just finished studying Politics and Philosophy, and I am really excited to be on your Officer Team for 2012/13. I have had a great three years here at Sheffield, and have particularly enjoyed being part of the Women's Committee, as well as representing women on Students' Union Council. Over the next few months I will be organising campaigns to empower women students and working hard to make our campus a safer and more inclusive place for all.
OBJECTIVE 1: STUDENT SAFETY, WELLBEING AND SUPPORT
• Aim: To create a women friendly, woman positive environment in our student community – one that celebrates and champions women students.
a) Standing up to Sexual Harassment
- Expand the Zero Tolerance policy to include accommodation and alternative venues that are hosting Students’ Union (SU) club nights
- Run a campaign with local charity 'Hollaback! Sheffield' on the issue of Street Harassment
b) Empowering Women Students
- Survey students to find out where and when they feel safe and unsafe
- Organise regular inexpensive women-only self-defence classes
- Celebrate Elimination of Violence Against Women Day with a Reclaim the Night March in Sheffield
- Work with the University on issues relating to survivors of sexual violence
c) A Body Positive Students’ Union
- A positive Body Image Campaign – in collaboration with the Sports Officer and the Women’s Committee
- Sustainability and continued promotion of BiteBack – particular emphasis on ensuring that male students know they can use the service
- Work with Sports Sheffield to ensure that students with eating and exercise disorders are aware of the support services available
- Emphasise the benefits of a healthy lifestyle on wellbeing through the Positive Body Image Campaign and by pushing for healthier options in SU outlets
d) A Student Parent Friendly Union
- Push for more child friendly spaces and activities in the SU
- Develop an Online forum for student parents
- Promote the SU’s Breastfeeding Friendly Award
- Lobby the University to increase nursery capacity
- Work with the Education Officer to lobby for earlier provision of timetables, enabling student parents to organise child care more easily
- Work with the University on developing a student Paternity Policy
OBJECTIVE 2: STUDENT REPRESENTATION AND LIBERATION
• Aim: To increase the profile, visibility and student engagement with Liberation Campaigns (this encompasses: women, lgbt, black, and disabled and dyslexic students) and work to combat under-representation within our Students’ Union
a) Educating and Empowering
- Expanding the Leadership Programme - which helps women students to develop their confidence and leadership skills.
- Visual displays of women and minority group representation
- Improved inclusion officer training on liberation issues
- 'Feminist Fridays' in Coffee Revolution – an informal space for feminists and those interested in feminism to discuss feminist issues
b) Improving Representation
- Information pack for women and under-represented groups to encourage/support them to stand for an elected position
- Encourage creation of liberation reps on committees
- Implement NUS Conference Gender Quota Policy
c) Liberation on Campus
- Create a handbook for women students
- Implement Anti-Sexism Policy
- Support liberation committees in whichever ways I can
- Encouraged collaboration between committees – culminating in an Equality Week
- Visible celebration of the liberation campaigns in the SU
- Consult women in sport about their experiences at Sheffield
d) International Women’s Week
- An exciting, accessible and truly INTERNATIONAL women’s week!
OBJECTIVE 3: WORKING TOWARDS AN EQUAL FUTURE
• Aim: To lead and support student campaigns on social justice and equality.
a) Equal Pay, Fair Pay
- Celebrate Equal Pay Day with Women’s Committee and have a film showing of Made in Dagenham
- Support students with the Living Wage Campaign
b) Students as Workers
- Work with Careers Service, Job Shop and Student Advice Centre to ensure students know their rights in relation to employment
- Encourage more students to think about joining a Trade Union
c) Women in Engineering
- Work with engineering department on their Women in Engineering strategy in order to make our Engineering dept. more attractive to and supportive of women students
- Ensure the views of women students in male dominated courses are represented
d) A Pro-Choice Union
- Take a Pro-Choice policy to Students’ Union Council
- Mark passing of Abortion Act with women’s committee – including a showing of Vera Drake
- Celebrate Mothers’ Day in International Women’s Week - to draw attention to global maternal health issues
