Hi, I'm Luke and I'm your Sports Officer! I studied Geography (BSc) and I am a member of both Men's Cricket and Badminton clubs. Varsity is an obvious highlight of my time at Sheffield and I'm aiming to organise another successful event, hopefully with a Sheffield Uni victory! I also am aiming to increase the number of opportunities for students to gain coaching qualifications to enhance the progress of sport at Sheffield. There are loads of ways to engage with sport and if you have any queries, just come and ask!
OBJECTIVE 1: STUDENTS UNION AND SPORT’S REPRESENTATION
Aim: To improve representation and develop a clear Students’ Union strategy on Sport in order to set further objectives over a period of time. Strengthen the relationship between the Student’s Union and Sport Sheffield.
Hold bi-annual Sports Forum with Students from all areas of sport including Club Sport, Intra Mural, Access Sport (fun time Friday etc), International students, society sport, S10 gym etc.
Use feedback from the first forum to develop the sports strategy so that it reflects the actual needs of students.
Develop a system whereby new sports clubs can be incorporated into the University, change the “no” attitude to setting up new clubs if they can prove to be sustainable.
Objective 2 – Coaching Qualifications
Aim: Increase the numbers of first and second years gaining sports coaching qualifications, leading to more employable students and better coaching for beginners
Communicate and form links with coaching qualification providers
Establish funding/budget
Develop a system by which first years can get into coaching
Establish links between student coaches and GIAG and Access Sport, ensuring there are opportunities for newly qualified coaches to gain experience
Objective 3 – Sport as part of a healthy lifestyle
Research into and run a campaign highlighting the importance of sport in all areas of physical and mental health. Compile information in such a way that this campaign can be run year on year.
Provide a student friendly nutrition guide, perhaps tailored to different sporting requirements/lifestyles
Work with Fitness and Wellbeing/Gym at S10
Work on campaign/s with Welfare Officer, Societies (eg Mental Health Matters), Nightline, Women’s Committee (Positive body campaign), Health Service etc, showing how sport is important in a balanced life.
Work with the new “Juice” scheme for University Staff and find ways to promote the message of physical, mental and social wellbeing to students
