I've just finished three amazing years doing Geography and Sociology and I am now looking forward to the next chapter... being your SU Development officer for the year ahead! As Development Officer, I want to ensure the Students' Union is a place where everyone feels their needs are met; whether that's to do with accessibility... food options... night time fun... and lots lots more. I'm also really excited to be a part of shaping an innovative environmentally sustainable and socially conscious Students' Union at this crucial time with students always at the very heart of it. I look forward to working with you all this year!
Sustainable development.
“Climate change is the most severe problem that we are facing today", says Sir David King (Chief Scientific adviser to the
Government). And so it is vitally important to engage students in issues around sustainability of the planet, issues that will directly affect us in our lifetime…I am going to focus this through promoting a culture of cycling, responsible waste management and a truly ‘green’ University house development…
1. Research problematic areas for student cyclists/pedestrians in Sheffield and
lobby for them to be improved.
2. Get more students on bikes: work with council to get more bikes donated from
community.
3. Increase profile of Bring it don’t bin it and set up a student freecycle scheme for
throughout the year.
4. Work closely with University and project managers to ensure that the new
building is developed as sustainably as possible.
Inclusive development.
The Students’ Union and University should be a safe, inclusive
and accessible space for all groups of students.
1. Research needs of under represented groups- students from liberation
backgrounds, to faith communities, to students with particular dietary
requirements, international, TILL students etc…
2. Collaborate with various commercial service providers to meet these needs.
Student development.
The Students' Union belongs to Students.....This objective aims to make that more of a reality by providing students with a structure in the SU and University they can
take ownership of.
1. Create a student skill share hub.
2. Generate a pool of student ideas for nights in the SU and aid students in
actually creating them.
3. Work with Engineering/Architecture department to get real life design projects
the curriculum (e.g. design and build your new department!)
Implementing Student Union policy…
Most of all though, I believe I must work on actualising the policies students have
created and voted on. The policies I will be responsible for this year are:
Environmental, Israeli occupation, Animal testing, Solidarity with Gaza students,
Arms companies, Bottled water and Solidarity with Gazan students.
