The University of Sheffield is proud to be a Fairtrade University and you'll find Fairtrade products in all Students' Union and University outlets throughout the year. We're celebrating Fairtrade Fortnight with a host of events, as well as offers and new products. Check out our stall in the Students' Union Plaza on Monday 25th and Tuesday 26th February 2013 to find out more information about Fairtrade and enter our competition to win a selection of Fairtrade goodies kindly donated by the Students' Union Shop and the University Accommodation and Campus Services.
Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices (which must never fall lower than the market price), Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives.
A Fairtrade University is one that has made a commitment to supporting and using Fairtrade. The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Students' Union ensure that Fairtrade products are available in as many places as possible and is committed to raising the awareness of Fairtrade and the benefits that it brings to producers in developing countries with students and staff.
Goal 1: The Students' Union (SU) and the University/College authorities both create a Fairtrade policy incorporating these five goals.
Goal 2: Fairtrade products are made available for sale in all campus shops. Fairtrade products are used in all Cafés/restaurants/bars on campus. Where this is not possible, there is a commitment to begin to use Fairtrade products in these establishments as soon as it becomes possible to do so.
Goal 3: Fairtrade products (for example, coffee and tea) are served at all meetings hosted by the university/college and the Students' Union, and are served in all university/college and Student Union management offices.
Goal 4: There is a commitment to campaign for increased Fairtrade consumption on campus.
Goal 5: Set up a Fairtrade Steering Group.
