In 2013 just before Varsity the LGBT committee supported by the sports officer and sports committee ran the campaign 'We are all Black and Gold' aimed at making the universities sports clubs more accessible to LGBT students on campus. This campaign was launched as a response to the NUS 'Out in Sport' Survey which found an overwhelming amount of LGBT students chose to exercise on their own rather than participate in team sports for fear of prejudice. All sports team members and supporters of the campaign were invited to sign an LGBT inclusivity pledge. Here is the pledge:
We pledge to promote inclusivity in University sport for LGBT students. We endorse the treatment of all participants with fairness, equality, respect, and dignity. LGBT students participating in our sport, whether as a competitor or spectator, will be treated in accordance with these values. We believe that there is no place for homophobia, biphobia and transphobia in University sport, and we will work to combat it. University sport is a privilege which all students have the right to enjoy. We're all black and gold.
To date there have been 263 signatures to the pledge. This campaign is something the LGBT committee are going to continue with in the academic year 2013/14. So watch this space!
