AREA PLANS

Activities

  • Consider Green Impact criteria and identify initiatives to be implemented by Activities Department.
  • Monitor volumes of printed and un-used stock to reduce over-printing.
  • In coordination with environmental societies e.g. Swap, People & Planet etc, organise regular swap-shops for books, clothes etc.

Central Services

  • Ensure all staff aware of policies and adhere to them.
  • Educate staff in environmental best practice and Students' Union procedures.

Children's Services

  • Develop current recycling facilities to include plastic, tin & glass.
  • Instead of paper communication use email or text communication.
  • Boiler replacement (current one 15+ yrs old so not energy efficient).

Commercial

  • Incorporate action points into business plans for each area.
  • Train staff in environmental objectives.
  • Departmental environmental week.

Democracy & Representation

  • To fully consider the environmental impact of all democratic and representative activity to ensure the methods we use are responsible and set an example to our members (e.g. reduce our paper usage through further expansion of on-line voting).
  • Work with the elected Student Officers to engage our membership in greening their Students' Union and the University Of Sheffield.
  • Work with the elected Student Officers and support staff to support our members in minimising the environmental impact of their lifestyles.

Entertainment

  • Engage with environment project group and environmental support staff to understand Students' Union goals as objectives are developed. Deliver Staff training in environmental issues focused on Students' Union environmental objectives, needs & best practice. Following training, develop strategies amongst the staff team to ensure objectives are successfully pursued.
  • Review marketing and promotions media, to reduce the environmental impact of paper usage.
  • Review purchasing options and maintenance of technical equipment in line with environmental strategy, reducing carbon footprint of events.

Marketing

  • Set up working group to look at print usage.
  • E-communications – investigate ways to improve more environmental friendly communications working alongside the new Environmental Co-ordinator.
  • Communication – with the Environmental Co-ordinator raise awareness of all the environmentally friendly activity taking place by the Students' Union and its societies.

Resources

  • Green Impact – need information on what needs to be done from facilities.
  • Policies – Put specific environmental action points in the business plans.
  • Awareness – inform marketing about what has been done so that it can be communicated. Ensure environmental awareness is covered in inductions. Encourage everyone to take responsibility for the environment around the building eg closing external doors. Provide tips about the cost of leaving equipment on or travel.

Corporate

  • Appoint a part-time Environmental Co-ordinator, based broadly on the proposals of the project team.

Student Advice Centre

  • Reduce paper usage: electronic case recording, don't print emails, get business cards that are blank on the back to write on them.
  • Student Advice Centre staff member as environmental champion – work with Students' Union Environmental Co-ordinator. Audit of environmental best practice, review use of printed material, particularly with respect to Students' Union print review.
  • Aim for environmental best practice: recycle as much as possible, make other changes as recommended by additional environmental guidance.
