VISION 2012
AREA PLANS
Activities
- Invite the local community to major student events e.g. showcase, and investigate the feasibility of community groups using Students' Union facilities.
- Encourage clubs, societies, representative and working committees to showcase their activities in the Zone.
- Raise awareness of Students' Union meeting rooms and venues and assist commercial services in promoting offers and deals to clubs, societies & working committees.
Central Services
- Look at the new rooms and spaces on the room booking system. Consult with user groups to decide if defensible spaces can be booked or not. We will consider how people can book rooms (systems and rules) and how to facilitate the different use of the rooms i.e. equipment, portering support, layout etc.
- World class guest care training.
- Consider ways in which the departments can contribute to the building and services being presented to promote the image of a vibrant building to include the presentation of front line staff.
Children's Services
- Rooms in all sections to be made welcoming and have ‘comfy areas'.
- Gradual building upgrade and renewal.
- Make building inclusive to all users, ramp into pre-school and terrace area for 2-3's.
Commercial
- Contribute to a cross area group to develop proposals for a new customer care programme and provide representation to the new training forum.
- Let members know what the advantages of using the Student' Union are over the High Street.
- Allow creative time for staff to work on projects to increase the vibrancy of the building.
Democracy & Representation
- To establish the communication of our democratic principles and ideals as a core message throughout the building.
- Ensuring that our members use the space provided for campaigning in vibrant and innovative ways contributing to the overall vibrancy of the building and increasing the effectiveness of the campaigning activities.
- To establish a physical and permanent hub for students involved and interested in campaigning and representation that both educates and involves (likely focused around ‘shop frontage' of new Democracy & Representation Office).
Entertainment
- Trial, develop and / or adopt customer service training programme, based around FISH, in conjunction with other Students' Union Departments in related business areas.
- Improve information and resource available to student groups, encouraging new ideas and concepts from those who wish to run events. Work with the Activities Department to identify and target under-represented groups to facilitate events that appeal to these demographics.
- Develop plan to run annual student band and DJ competition.
Marketing
- PROMOTION OF SPACES – work with activities department & facilities to advertise to students and customers available spaces for their use.
- SIGNAGE – propose and implement signage plan.
- Attract exciting and engaging businesses and initiatives (not just commercial) to the stall space.
Resources
- Investigate options for updating the customer service training offered to staff, and offer the training to all departments.
- Build in time to be creative, both with annual dept away days (see goal 1) and regular reflection.
- Involvement in developing the look and feel of the building – make features of quirks and get rid of institutional grey.
Student Advice Centre
- Use of whiteboards to encourage ideas generation, allow staff ownership of the space at Glossop Road and in the Students' Union building. Build in time for staff creativity and ideas sharing.
- Use space in Student Advice Centre as display space for students, eg artwork, posters.
- Develop more one-off events to allow students to connect with each other and the Students' Union in the Advice Centre, including 20th anniversary celebration in September 2011.
