AREA PLANS

Activities

  • Activities, International and Sports Officers to receive advice and support from the Democracy and Representation Manager with regard to CDC, club, society and working committee elections.
  • Monitor and publicise democratic decisions which affect sports and activities (e.g. funding/Students' Union Council decisions).
  • Develop a strategy to communicate the link between decisions taken by student groups and democratic behaviour e.g. SutCo play choices, Rag's charity choices etc.

Central Services

  • Follow the guidelines from Human Resources (H.R.) for inclusion in the staff induction of key democratic points.
  • Use of Performance Development Review system to reinforce importance of democracy in our organisation and encourage staff to build links with the Officers.
  • Department notice boards will have information on democratic structure and will promote election processes.

Children's Services

  • Develop existing Nursery Committee.
  • Set up comment box system for parents.
  • Brand and visual identity roll out.

Commercial

  • Follow guidelines from H.R. in the inclusion in casual staff induction of the key democratic points.
  • Assist the Entertainments Department in providing any democracy based events.
  • Department notice boards will have information on democratic structure and will promote election processes.

Democracy & Representation

  • Work with Marketing to repackage democracy & representation around issues relevant to the lives of our members and using language that is relevant and easily comprehensible; end the promotion of voting as an end in itself and instead show the value in our work through aligning our communications to the areas of student life that our members want our support in.
  • Create an annual democracy & representation communications plan.
  • Facilitate, co-ordinate and support events that will help to foster and develop a participative democratic culture throughout the year, including working with the Activities Department to support and advise relevant staff in the planning and coordination of CDC, club and society elections.

Entertainment

  • Continue to utilise the Entertainments Committee, Societies Committees and student body in shaping the entertainment programme. Specifically gather the feedback and ideas of under-represented groups in the current programme.
  • Contribute communications and event support to the elections process & publicity of democratic outcomes. Brief staff and managers on elections and democratic outcomes.
  • Develop understanding of other working committees, sport clubs & societies, in order to continue the successful support of Entertainments Committee.

Marketing

  • Train and support the new democracy post on e-voting, current campaign plan and areas for development.
  • Work with new staff post to ascertain what research needs to be carried out to enable the democracy unit to move forward eg) language used, why students do or do not vote, etc.
  • Then depending the D&R's budget advise on the best way to carry out and analyse the research to inform the new post on possible ways to move forward.
  • Communications plan – work with the democracy & Representation Department in developing a communications plan that fits within the communications strategy.

Resources

  • Ensure that appropriate information in relation to democracy is included in inductions for new staff and provide a refresher for existing staff.
  • Use of Performance Development Review system to reinforce the importance of democracy in our organisation and encourage staff to build links with Student Officers.
  • Appoint a Democracy Co-ordinator.

Student Advice Centre

  • Build effective links with Student Officers through involvement at handover, continued contact during period of office, facilitating sessions for Student Officers. Working with the Democracy and Representation Manager, project teams and the Director of Membership Involvement. Student Advice Centre (SAC) to input into review of Officer Induction.
  • SAC to work more closely with committees, including providing briefings and assisting with induction.
  • SAC to be involved in publicising democratic structure, elections and democratic outcomes, eg reminding students they have a vote, listing the polling stations. Information on democratic structure from D & R department to be made available to staff.
