I'm a 2nd year Psychology student and I joined the swimming and Water polo team in my first year. Through my involvement in that last year, I found out about the Sports Committee. I've really enjoyed being involved in the sport side of the University and I've made lots of new friendships.
My responsibility on the committee is to help support the main Summer Varsity events but to be honest, everyone in the committee gets involved in everything. My role was to help on day to day tasks like being at the venues, putting up the banners and getting the crowd hyped up. It was so exciting to go to all the events, especially for free!
I've definitely improved my communication skills as you have to learn to talk to lots of different clubs and make sure everyone is aware of what's going on and when. You have to be quite flexible on the Sports Committee as some things tend to be a bit last minute! Working as part of a team is important and this year's committee has worked together so well. I think we've raised the profile of sports committee and lots of new people want to join next year, especially after the Varsity win!
My highlight of this year's Varsity was definitely the Men's Water polo at Ponds Forge. Unfortunately, our women's team had already lost our match but the Men's was nail bitingly close and the atmosphere was amazing! Varsity brings the whole University together, it's the highlight of my year.
We celebrated the Varsity win with a ride in a party bus back from Hillsborough! We drove past Hallam and blasted out 'Black and Yellow', it was so fun! And then we went to Roar and partied.
Being part of the Students' Union has definitely given me so many opportunities like this summer when I'm volunteering for the Burton Street Foundation. I've made some of my best friends from being on the sports teams.
Since being involved with the Sports Committee, I'm considering Sports Psychology as a future career to bring together my degree and my passion for sport.
