Referenda
Students are often asked to vote on referenda issues. Referenda can be
called by any student, with the support of others, to establish Union
Policy or change the Constitution and Bye-laws.
The President is responsible for organising a referendum when instructed:
- by a petition of 4% of full members (names and Registration
numbers required).
- by a 2/3 majority decision of the Student Union Council
(submitted either by a councillor or a petition of 50 students).
- by a decision of the Student Executive Committee.
The general arrangements for referenda require:
- any proposals not to exceed 100 words, except in the case of
Constitution or Bye-Law amendments.
- in the case of proposed amendments to the Constitution or
Bye-Laws the full wording of the amendments has to be clearly displayed
adjacent to the Polling Station.
Prior to the referendum, Council will have at least one meeting, open to
all full members to observe, to debate the proposal.
See Constitution & Bye-Laws for more details.
