Moving house can be a stress at the best of times, however nightmare landlords, overpriced rent and below standard living conditions can make it ten times worse. Student accommodation can vary greatly. We’re lucky in Sheffield to have so many good quality properties, however students are still battling housemate horror stories and landlord disputes. It’s therefore important to know your rights and feel in control of the house hunting process.

There are more beds than students, yet landlords and letting agencies are still putting the pressure on people to sign up earlier and earlier each year. It is now at the point that Freshers are being targeted only weeks after they’ve arrived at University, and so something has to change. It is unfair that the housing market is allowed to play on the vulnerability of many students trying to pressurise them to sign for a house so early on. Not only can this lead to students making the wrong choice about their future home (and possibly housemates), but it can also lead to feelings of inadequacy when many people simply have no idea who they want to live with so early on in the year. I want to make landlords aware of this and begin campaigning for the housing market to be more student-focussed.

We need a power shift back onto students so that everyone feels able to make the right choice, at the right time for them.
