How to report a crime

If you are the victim of a crime, it is vitally important that you report this to the Police. If you report a crime, you may be able to stop someone else from being a victim in the future.

Who to call

  • 999 – The emergency number. Call this if you face an immediate threat. Incidents when you should call 999 include:
    • Any incident that may involve violence
    • An offender may still be at the scene of the crime
    • Racially motivated incidents
  • 101 – Call this number to report a crime to South Yorkshire Police

If you witness a crime, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. This is a confidential service. They will not ask for your name, trace your call, tape your call or ask you to go to court.

After you have reported a crime

You should be issued with a crime reference number. You should be notified of the outcome of the police investigation into the crime. If there is a court case, you may be required to attend as a witness.
