 Post study work scheme

The current Post-Study Work route will be closed after 5 April 2012.  Your dependants may still be able to apply for a visa but will need to return home.  They will need to complete the VAF10 form.

What are my rights to work in the UK when I am waiting for the PSW decision?

Normally you are only allowed to work for a maximum of four months after the end of your studies on your student visa. However, if you apply for the PSW you will be allowed to work for longer provided you submit your PSW application before your current student visa expires. This will allow you to continue to work unlimited hours provided you are not filling a permanent job even if your student visa has expired.

You are not permitted to take any self employment or set up business during this period, and you may be asked by an employer to provide evidence of your right to work during this period. You can show them this letter from the UK Border Agency (PDF, 64.5KB) which confirms this right together with the Guide for Employers which provides an overview of the options for international students to work in the UK during and after their studies.

You will also be able to switch into Tier 2 if you are working for a licenced employer in a graduate role.  There is no minimum time period you must be employed before being able to switch.

What are my other options?

Please see our information on working in the UK after your studies.
