Minimum wage
How much should I be paid?
The national minimum wage (NMW) is the minimum amount that an employer can pay you. The rate is reviewed every year and no employers are exempt.
Most employees are entitled to the NMW, including full and part time workers, students, agency workers and casual staff. Both home and international students are entitled to the NMW.
Some types of workers are not entitled to the NMW and you can find more information here.
What is the national minimum wage?
There are different amounts, depending on your age. From October 2012 the rates are:
- Youth rate (16 to 17 years) - £3.68 per hour
- Developmental rate (18 to 20 years) - £4.98 per hour
- Adult rate (21 years and older) - £6.19 per hour
If you are not receiving the National Minimum Wage, you can make a complaint to the Pay and Work Rights Helpline
