Podcasts

What are Podcasts?

Podcasts are a simple way to automatically get regular audio broadcasts which you can then listen to from your computer or MP3 player. You choose which podcasts to subscribe to, so you only ever get the content that you're really interested in, and once you've subscribed you don't have to lift a finger to get them. All Union podcast subscriptions are completely free, so it's a great way to keep up to date with events.

Vidcasts

You can also choose to receive podcasts that have video files enclosed, although you will only be able to watch these on certain portable players, as well as your computer.

How do I receive podcasts?

You will need to download and install a piece of software on your computer to search for the latest episodes of your chosen podcasts. You can download any one of the following three for free:

Once you've installed your software, you can set up new subscriptions to podcasts. This may be done in a variety of ways depending on what software you've chosen, but you will usually need to cut and paste the URL of the podcast (e.g. 'http://www.shef.ac.uk/union/student-voice/theexchange/exchangepodcast.xml') into a new subscription box. Your software will then automatically download the episode for you every time there's a new broadcast so you'll never miss one.

You can also subscribe to various Union RSS feeds, although these work slightly differently to podcasts.
