International Students Hit by Scam

International students from all over the UK have been targetted by a scam in which a fake UKBA employee threatens the student with deportation or a prison sentence if they do not pay an immediate fee of up to £2000 to update their visa details.

The callers appear to have a lot of information about the student and it is not known how they have obtained this data.

If you get a call like this do not confirm any personal details or make any payments as this is an illegal scam.

You should report the call immediately to the Action Fraud website via the UKBA website: http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitecontent/newsarticles/2012/august/13-genuine-website and to the University: international.students@sheffield.ac.uk.
