Sheffield has an array of sport for you to follow or become involved in whatever your interest.
If it's football that really gets you going, then Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday are the two big local clubs for you to follow. Both of the grounds for these clubs are only a short bus ride away, which is handy as many of you will find yourselves sitting exams there at one point or another. For fans of rugby union, the Sheffield Tigers and the Sheffield Oaks are local teams for you to support, and maybe even play for, whilst Sheffield Eagles fly the flag for local rugby league. If basketball is your passion, Sheffield Sharks and City of Sheffield Saints are the local teams for you to get passionate about.
If you want to try something new, Sheffield Steelers Ice Hockey team are very big in the city, and watching one of their matches is truly something to behold. Other ice hockey teams for you to follow include Sheffield Scimitars and Sheffield Shadows Women's Ice Hockey Club. If you fancy taking it up, why not try skating at Ice Sheffield, where every Thursday is student night and entry costs just £1.10. You can also book skating, hockey and curling lessons here, so you never know what you mind end up doing! If you're interested in snooker, the World Snooker Championships are held every year at the Crucible Theatre in the city centre and is definitely worth a look.
If you want to take up a sport within the Student's Union, whether you've played it before or not, there are 48 sports clubs for you to try at many different levels, as well intra-mural sport which involves various societies playing sport against each other, which is a great opportunity to meet new people and get fit. Even if you prefer watching to participating, there is nothing better to watch than Winter and Summer Varsity, the bi-annual sporting event between the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University. The competition really heats up and so many students are involved the atmosphere is electric!
