'Be Involved' in schools volunteering

Are you interested in working with children?

Do you want to gain experience in a school?

Are you thinking about a career in teaching?

If you answered 'yes' to any of these questions, then Schools Volunteering is for you! Each opportunity is different which means you can choose the one that suits you.

Click each project below to find out information. If you would like to be involved in any of our opportunities you must pop into the office to book your place.

There's a range of placements, from one-to-one tutoring to working with groups, and supporting the teacher to bring a subject to life. Placements last a minimum of 10 weeks and you can volunteer for a morning, afternoon or whole day to suit your timetable.

  • In a primary school, you'll help improve literacy and numeracy skills.
  • In a secondary school, you can help in your chosen subject area.

When? Various options to suit your timetable
Where? Schools in Sheffield (approx. 30 - 45 minute journey on public transport)
How often? Weekly for a minimum of 10 weeks during term time

With the help of the Professor Fluffy puppet, you'll introduce the idea of university to the children. Working in a group, you will devise and plan the sessions using the using the Professor Fluffy work scheme and resources.

How often? Weekly for a minimum of 6 weeks during term time

Where? Schools in Sheffield (approx. 30 - 45 minute journey on public transport)
How often? One off activity during term time

If you're studying law, this is particularly great experience as you'll be helping pupils to prepare their case and practice their courtroom roles as lawyers, witnesses or magistrates.

What can you achieve?

  • Invaluable experience of working with children in a school
  • Training in safeguarding and tutoring techniques for FREE
  • Reference from a teacher for a PGCE or other teaching applications
  • Try before you buy - decide if teaching really is for you

Useful Information

DBS Checks

For weekly schools volunteering, you will need to complete a DBS check (a criminal record check). Sheffield Volunteering do this for you for free. Have a look at our DBS Help page for more information.
