Varsity la la la.. Varsity la la laaaaaaa

Monday 21st March 2011 @2.53PM

Varsity is nearly upon us and I am very excited (if a little stressed)!!!!
For all of you freshers or Varsity virgins out there, Varisty is THE week of the Uni calender! Your Uni competes against Hallam at over 60 sporting fixtures to see just who is the most superior Sheffield University. Obviously we dominate the field of academics, and although we fair better in national sports leagues, Hallam have managed to hold on to this prestigious sporting title for one too many years. I can't even remember the last time we won, it must've been over 7 years ago. We've had a couple of tied scores in the competitions recent history but this year is THE year that we take it to Hallam and smash them all over the court, the pool, the field, the pitch etc.. etc.. etc.. rada rada!!!

There are 55 points up for grabs this year after the introduction of a new points structure that awards every single teams performance as opposed to the performance of overall clubs by offering a point per sport. BOOMER for uuuuuss!!

This year also sees the introduction of 3 new sports, Futsal and Aikido will be competing for (and winning) a point and Judo will be participating as a showcase as there is no established club at Hallam University. Boooooo!

So I've trawled through the league tables and highlighted some key fixtures and attempted to analyse where we stand in comparison to *whispers* that other Uni in Sheffield...

Apologies to non-team sports.. this is not intentionally biased.. it's just based on info that I could get a hold of!! Quickly!

So here goes............... BLACK AND GOLD!!!!

The Abbeydale day as a whole will be a highly passionate and contentious one. Hallam men’s rugby 1sts are trailing in the Premier North league, with the 2nds staying afloat mid-table in 3B with the 3rds facing relegation prospects in league 3B. The University of Sheffield 1sts have won 7 out of their 11 games and are sat 4th in league 1A of BUCS, the Uni 2nds are sat in second place in league 2B only dropping 2 games all season so they look poised to beat their Hallam equivalents. The Uni 3rd XI are sat in 3rd place in league 3B, one place ahead of Hallam’s 2nd team which looks like a fantastic position for both our 2nd and 3rd squads for the 30th of March. The women’s rugby should be a show of dominance by the favourable Uni side. After gaining promotion at the end of the 2007/08 season, the team has managed to hold on to their title of being the only University of Sheffield side to be in a Premier league. They have gained much experience over the past 4 seasons playing against Leeds Met and Loughborough week in week out and hopefully this will shine through in this years Varsity fixture. Hallam are not a side to be considered lightly however as they are also competing very well having stormed their league 2B winning every game. The hockey men’s 1sts are not looking in the promising position after losing to their Hallam counterparts twice in the BUCS season, but there’s much hope after they managed to beat Leeds Met 1sts in a mid-season game. The match ups are looking promising for the other 2 University men’s hockey sides with the 2nds competing 2 leagues above their Hallam rivals and the 3rds playing 3 leagues above. Men’s lacrosse will be a fantastic final game to watch at Abbeydale as the Uni side are seeking promotion via playoffs into the top flight where Hallam are currently sitting comfortably in second place in the Premier league. The other final fixture on the Abbeydale day will be the women’s 1sts hockey. With Hallam in a relegation position at the bottom of league 1A and Uni in a promotion position at the top of league 2B, this game looks set to be one of the tightest of the competition. The lower Uni teams are looking more promising with our 2nds two leagues above Hallam’s 2nds and our 3rds in a league above Hallam’s 3rds.

The pool day at Ponds Forge looks set to be a very tight fixtures. The Uni women aren't expected to win the waterpolo however after analysis of prior performances throughout the season, the mens should be a really close match. Swimming wise, both long and short course swimmers dominated at the BUCS championships but they have never won their Varsity competition!! First time for everything!!!! On the subject of Canoe-polo, Jenny dean captain of swimming and waterpolo states " Canoe-polo? I have no idea". Great!!

The English Institute of Sports hub day looks to be fantastic with 9 fixtures over 10 hours. Futsal is a new addition to the competition with Hallam making it the the Quarter finals of the BUCS championships and our very own Uni side being Futsal champions we should be in for an absolute showdown!! Netball 1sts also looks set to be a great showdown with Uni sitting just under Hallam in 3rd place in league 2B, but with Uni on a high after a great cup final victory, I'm sure that they are believing that everything and anything is possible!

The finals day will be fantastic with over 15 fixtures taking place across Sheffield culminating with the football 1sts games at Hillsborough the home of Sheffield Wednesday Football Club. The women’s 1sts will have a fight on their hands taking on the newly promoted Hallam 1sts who will be on a high after securing advancement into the women’s Premier league. The current Uni side are battling hard in their last 2 delayed games of the season to take the 2B league away from a dominating Durham and a Leeds side that has grown ridiculously in talent as the season has progressed.

The final fixture of the Varsity season couldn’t be any closer with both men’s 1sts football teams competing in BUCS league 1A with Hallam placing second in the table and Uni sitting second from bottom. The rivalry so far this season has resulted in wins for both teams both at 2-1 a piece so these two teams will head into the finals really head to head and on a level playing field.

So that's my round up of the games ahead...

If you don't have the varsity bug yet get onto youtube and search club sport!!!

Shiiiiivvverssss!!!!!

Take care.. train hard!

Love x

Winter Varsity 2011 RESULTS

University of Sheffield 4 Sheffield Hallam 1

After a disappointing loss in the first event of the Winter Varsity season, the University of Sheffield Skiiers and Snowboarders pulled some fantastic performances out the bag to bring the Winter Varsity Trophy home.

This fantastic 3 point lead will stand Uni in great stead to get as we move into the summer competition as these points are carried over to contribute to the overall Varsity points table.

Skiing and Snowboarding - Sheffield Ski Village

But that didn’t seem to put any pressure on Uni. The semi-finals of the ski and snowboard races went as planned. Uni’s first string of competitiors took on Hallam’s second string, and vice versa, in both disciplines. In all four cases, the first team made it through to the finals. The first sign of Uni’s domination showed in these finals. Not only did they win both ski and snowboard finals, but in both cases they did it by way of clean sweep, winning each of three races the finals were run over.

Uni’s 1-0 deficit had been turned around into a 2-1 advantage with two events to complete. To put it simply, if Uni won either of the freestyle events, ski or snowboard, they would take the Winter Varsity title that Hallam had edged to victory in last year.

In the end, they took both, A 90 minute qualifying session involving 40 competitors yielded 16 finalists, for skiers and snowboarders from each university, and of each quartet, three were male and one female. The finalists each got two runs, with the best counting, and the team’s average score determining the winner.

In the end Uni took the ski and snowboard freestyle finals, impressing the jusges with their range of tricks and use on slope. The judges were especially looking for flips, but whatever the criteria, Uni’s competitors fulfilled them best.

The final results were announced, as per usual, in the bar, cueing scenes of euphoria from Uni students and fans as they saw their team orchestrate a clinical comeback.

Uni sports officer Emma Bird gave her recation at the end of the evening, saying, “Last year was an unexpected loss, but to fight back and win all four points this year is just incredible. The guys tonight have just outshone Hallam, especially in the racing. It was pretty tense, but it’s been immense.”

USport Club Manager Andy Cox told Forge Sport, “The trophy’s back where it belongs really. It’s the first we leased it out to Hallam last year. It was a great performance by snowboarding and sking and I couldn’t ask for any more. It was four points, so absolutely brilliant

“I was always confident, I’m not trying to be big-headed but I was already confident. Snowboarding and sking are really strong clubs and I was confident we would pull it back. It would have been great to have won the ice hockey, we went so close. I’m pleased the Winter Varsity Trophy is back at Sheffield Uni, on my trophy cabinet.”

Ice Hockey - Sheffield Motorpoint Arena

Saturday 12th February 2011 @19.03PM
University of Sheffield 3 Sheffield Hallam 5

Despite fantastic efforts from all of our players, Hallam took the lead with just over 5 minutes to go in the final period. Uni responded by pulling their keeper with one minute to go, however a lsot puck was capitalised on by Hallam's man of the Match Nick Manning to score the final goal in the game leaving the score a very unfair 5-3.
